While there is still a long way to go beforeMarvel’s Wolverinefinds its way to store shelves, fans can at least be delighted to learn that some prominent names are at the head of the project. Walt D. Williams, previously the critically acclaimed narrative writer forSpec Ops: The Line, has recently been promoted as the Narrative Director for Insomniac Games’ upcomingMarvel’s Wolverine.

Prior to joining Insomniac’sWolverineteam, Walt D. Williams was the lead writer for EA’s 2017 release ofStar Wars: Battlefront 2,which garnered some praise as the reboot’s first full-length campaign storyline. However, Williams’ most impactful piece of writing comes from 2012’sSpec Ops: The Line, a third-person shooter that has garnered a cult following for its gritty storyline and ruminations about the nature of modern warfare. In 2021, Williams joined Insomniac Games as a Lead Writer onMarvel’s Wolverinebefore being promoted to a more significant role this week.

In a brief Twitter post on May 19, Williams shared that he has updated his Twitter bio to showcase his new role at Insomniac Games as a Narrative Director. William’s new title is one of many promotions handed to Insomniac employees this week. Just yesterday, Mary Kenney, who previously worked as a writer onSpider-Man: Miles Morales, was promoted to a Senior Writer position forMarvel’s Wolverine. Multiple developers on theSpider-Man 2team have also found themselves in higher places as development continues on the upcoming PlayStation exclusive.

Fan reception to Williams’ promotion has been largely positive. In the comments section underneath his original post, many fans congratulate the writer on his promotion and reminisce about the impactSpec Ops: The Linehad on players a decade ago. Thanks to Walt D. William’s previous stories, players are excited and optimistic about the future ofMarvel’s Wolverine.

For now, fans can only speculate what Williams’ new role could mean for the story elements ofMarvel’s Wolverine. With a writer like Williams, who tends to create such personal and thought-provoking stories as one of the heads of the writing team, it could indicate that Marvel’s ill-tempered hero has a gritty journey ahead of him. Wolverine has never been much of a cheerful character within the Marvel Universe, so it may only seem fitting that a writer with a history of working on games likeSpec Ops: The LineandBioshockis now a spearhead in the writing effort forMarvel’s Wolverine.
