Summary
The next chapter inGod of Waris one that many fans of the franchise have been speculating on since the open ending ofGod of War Ragnarok. WithRagnarokseeing Kratos and Atreus going different ways in a bittersweet departure, the next game in the series could see the story venturing away from the Norse gods, especially when it comes to Atreus and his self-appointed mission of searching for the remaining Giants. The nextGod of Warwill likely seeAtreus on his own, and this search for Giants could lead him to some new and exciting realms that the franchise has yet to explore.
Although Atreus' road ahead is an uncertain path, the ending ofRagnarokmade it clear that the son of Kratos would be experiencing his own journey of self-discovery in the game’s next chapter. There have recently beenrumors of an Atreus spin-off game, and if these rumors hold any weight, players could possibly be experiencing some incredible adventures as Atreus treks through the unknown in order to learn more about the Giants.

The Next God of War Will Likely Explore New Pantheons
Whether Atreus' journey will be its own spin-off or the main story of the next mainlineGod of War, exploring new pantheons of different gods is what the game needs to separate itself from the previous Norse storylines. There’s no denying that the Norse pantheon that was explored inGod of WarandGod of War Ragnarokwere beautifully crafted explorations into these beloved myths, but after the events ofRagnarok, it feels as though the story of the Norse gods has been told as much as possible. Although there is definitely room for Norse gods to play a role in the nextGod of Waras Kratos' companions, the ending ofRagnarokfelt as though a new story was on the horizon, and that Atreus would be at the center.
God of Warhas already explored Greek and Norse pantheons, but Atreus' journey could lead him into new realms with new gods. Two possibilities would be Celtic gods and Egyptian gods if Atreus' search for the Giants takes him far from the reaches of the Norse realm. Celtic and Egyptian mythology hold two of the most well-known pantheons besides Greek and Norse, so exploring these two worlds could lead to some amazing stories.God of Warbreaking away from the Norse serieswill leave open a world of possibility for Atreus, and discovering Giants in the realms of either the Celts or the Egyptians would be an interesting change of pace.
Not only would new gods be exciting to see, butexploring a Celtic or Egyptian realmwould provide beautiful landscapes and artwork to showcase within the game. One of the greatest features in the NorseGod of Warseries is the jaw-dropping world design and artwork, and traveling to other worlds known for incredible artwork like Celtic knots or Egyptian hieroglyphs would be fascinating ways for Atreus to find clues of where to find remaining Giants, especially within a single entry.
The Norse God of War storyline completely shook up the franchise and subverted the expectations of many fans, and it was a great success. ThenextGod of Warinstallmentchanging in the same way as the Norse series changed from the Greek storyline would be continuing the trend of forcing characters into new transitions that help them grow as people, like how Kratos grew to be a great father in the Norse storyline. Putting Atreus into unfamiliar situations with new gods to interact with while he searches for remaining Giants would serve as a great mirror to Kratos as Atreus is tasked with learning about himself while dealing with realms that are complete mysteries to him.
God of War Ragnarokis available on PS4 and PS5.
