UnlikemostJoJoprotagonistswho were mainly limited to a single part, Jotaro was a major influence on other parts as well. He was heavily involved inDiamondisUnbreakable, and he stole the limelight from Josuke. Part 4 did not seem like it was focused on Josuke. Then Araki did not use Jotaro in Part 5, and it turned out to be a good decision. So for Part 6, Araki needed to be extremely careful. Jotaro’s involvement was needed as Part 6 is about his daughter, Jolyne and he couldn’t just leave out Jotaro. Thus, Araki’s decision regarding Jotaro’s role was crucial.
Araki used Jotaro at the beginning of Part 6, and then he wasn’t involved until the final arc. This allowed Jolyne and the rest of the characters to undergo proper development. Previously, Jotaro’s over-involvement had hindered the development of other characters, so it was a good thing that Araki didn’t repeat the same mistake.
His Role In The Story
Despite having a more limited role inStoneOcean, Jotaro served an important purpose. His memory disc enabled Pucci to accomplish his dream of obtaining the Stand that would allow him to achieve “heaven”.

His interaction with Jolyne inside the Green Dolphin Street Prison paved the way for Jolyne to become a better person. When Jolyne was jailed, Jotaro decided to break her out of the place. She had not been on good terms with Jotaro, so Jolyne did not react in a positive way when she met him. However, all of that changed when Jotaro decided to save herfrom Whitesnake’s attack. Whitesnake managed to steal both of Jotaro’s discs from his body. After seeing this sacrifice, Jolyne was moved, and she forgave her father and in her own way, she began to respect him.
She could have easily escaped from the facility, but she decided to stay behind and find the enemy who had stolen Jotaro’s discs. At this moment, it became clear that Jolyne was no longer a child, who did things impulsively, but she had become a person, who was willing to go the extra mile to save another person. After Jotaro got back both of his discs, he immediately decided to come to Jolyne’s aid, which once again shows that he cared about his daughter.
Fight With Pucci
Jolyne and her group’sfight against Enrico Pucciis outstanding, but many fans detest it, which really undermines it. The fight against Pucci gave every character a role. For instance, Anasui was considered a major threat by Puccibecause of Diver Down, and he decided to eliminate him first. Jolyne played her part, Ermes did her bit and so did Jotaro. All of them except Emporio died, who was saved by Jolyne. Emporio was chased by Pucci, who was extremely confident that he would easily kill the boy. However, Emporio used Weather Report’s Stand disc which led to Pucci’s death.
In the fight, there was a brief moment where Jotaro had the opportunity to defeat Pucci once and for all. Had he decided to take the opportunity, Jotaro would have once again stolen the limelight from another protagonist and this time it would have been his own daughter. Jotaro decided against killing Pucci and instead saved Jolyne from certain death. This allowed Pucci to land a devastating blow on Jotaro, which killed him.
However, this particular decision showed Jotaro’s growth as a character, and it laid a lot of emphasis on how much he loved his daughter. By opting against killing Pucci, he might have missed a chance to behind the hero, but he definitely redeemed himself as a parent in the eyes of his daughter. Overall the nerf allowed Jotaro to become a better character, who wasn’t afraid to show his emotions. So it is safe to say that Jotaro getting nerfed by Araki was pivotal in the success ofStoneOcean.
