Summary

Developer Mintrocket’sDave the Diverwas an indie hit last year, making a big splash with its mashup of resturant-managing alongside undersea exploration and fishing gameplay that proved extremely popular.Dave the Diverreeled many players in with its deceptively simple, cozy laid-back approach, charming pixel art style, and unique take on roguelite procedural levels that all combine to create an array of addicting mechanics and loops along with quirky characters who add a layer of fun and wholesome flavor to the whole experience.

In December, during The Game Awards 2023, the studio announced a crossover collaboration with anothergame centered around exploring the deep blue seas,Dredge. Similar toDave the Diver,Dredgewas an engaging title mixing Lovecraftian elements and themes into its own fishing simulator core, and the two properties were a great fit given their general aesthetics and design. Just recently,Dave the Diverreceived a second add-on, this one bringing pop culture’s most famous kaiju, Godzilla, stomping into Dave and his friends' world and lives. The timing aligns with the 70th anniversary of Godzilla’s debut this year, and the DLC provides a fantastic (though smaller scale) experience that fans of either property would surely appreciate.

Video Games Are Celebrating Godzilla’s 70th Anniversary

In 1954, the monstrous radioactive lizard first burst onto cinema screens and subsequently left its giant-sized footprint on the pop culture zeitgeist. Godzilla’s popularity and presence has endured ever since, even if there have been some uneven productions featuring the behemoth over the course of that time, in both movie and game form. A new film in the franchise,Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirehit theaters earlier this Spring, continuing the long line of Godzilla feature pictures.

Along with this, some games have also been getting in on the action to mark the 70th anniversary milestone, as, for example,Minecraftreceived Godzilla contentnear the beginning of the year. Mintrocket and Godzilla IP owner Toho Co., Ltd. announced the collaboration back in April, and only a few short weeks later, the DLC was made available for free to all existing owners.

Dave the Diver’s Godzilla Crossover DLC is a Breezy But Satisfying Salute

Dave the Diver’s region of The Blue Hole and its mysterious functionality lends more of a believable enough reason for Godzilla to wade his way into Dave and company’s neck of the woods. Among thevarious versions of Godzilladepicted through the years, the monster appears here in one of its more human-friendly incarnations. The DLC introduces a personable new character, Miki, who is an officer in the “United Nations Godzilla Countermeasures Center.” As she explains, another kaiju, the giant mutated lobster, Ebirah, has injured and pursued Godzilla to the Blue Hole. Miki has tracked the creatures and requests aid from Dave and his cadre, which they dutifully agree to. In classic fashion, the climax sees Godzilla facing off against Ebirah in an epic battle and preventing the threat it poses to both Bancho’s sushi establishment and the Hole itself.

Though it only consists of a short series of three main objectives,Dave the Diver’s Godzilla DLC offers some further cool post-game content in the form of collectible figurines representing other recognizable monsters from Godzilla media over the years. AsMinrocket has already revealed their next project, this likely means support forDave the Diverwill be winding down after this DLC, and thus may be its final major update. Even so, it is an excellent package unto itself and a wonderful sendoff to Dave and his friends after a successful run.Dave the Diver’s Godzilla DLC is an incredibly fun and clever albeit brief crossover, providing great entertainment value and a fitting salute to the King of the Monsters' 70th year within the game’s setting.
