Mary Elizabeth Winstead has shared the big screen in multiple action movies through the span of her career, and now she’s finally taking the spotlighting in theNetflixfilmKate. The streamer has released a first look at the film and now fans can get a taste of what to expect from Winstead as a deadly criminal operative.
TheKateclip shows Winsteadhigh up, wedged between two walls, gun pointed below her at two unsuspecting men. In the blink of an eye, she takes both men down. It’s a quick moment, but it’s enough to show just how serious and deadly Kate can be. The clip finishes with the ominous statement, “I’m Kate, and they’re going to know I was here.” It’s clear that whoever ‘they’ are, they had better run and hide.

TheKateteaser trailer was released as part of Netflix’s first-ever Geeked Week, a virtual event from June 7-11 that showcases genre entertainment exclusives, trailers, behind-the-scenes footage, and more. According to the film’s logline, Kate is a deadly criminal who is poisoned and has less than twenty-four hours to live, giving her just enough time to seek revenge on her enemies. Along the way, she forms an unexpected friendship with the daughter of one of her past victims.
Kateis far from Winstead’s first turn as an action star. She ran amok in Gotham City as Huntress inDC’sBirds of Prey, though reviews for the film were mostly mixed. She also starred in Quentin Tarantino’sDeath Proof, theDie Hardfranchise’sA Good Day To Die Hard, and cult favoriteScott Pilgrim vs. The World. Her work up until this point has shown that she can handle action as well as she can handle dialogue and character development.
At the head of the film is director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who has only directed one other major film,The Hunstman: Winter’s War, the sequel toSnow White and the Huntsman, for which he did visual effects. His credits include plenty of experience as a visual effects artist for films likeThe RingandPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, butKatewill only be his second time directing a major film.
Alongside Winstead, the film stars Woody Harrelson (Zombieland) and Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones). Harrelson, who is no stranger to playing wild characters, is also in the spotlight lately for his upcoming portrayal as CarnageinVenom: Let There Be Carnage. Fans have only seen the film’s trailer and his performance is already being compared to that of Batman’s Joker, a supervillain heavyweight that almost never disappoints on the screen.
Until a full-lengthKatetrailer is released, fans can take this teaser as a good sign that Winstead might very well wow in this action flick.
