With it being so long sinceVermintide 2initially dropped and theWarhammer Fantasysetting having officially reached its end, many were wondering where Fatshark would go next. The most logical option seemed for the games to transition from the grimdark fantasy setting ofWarhammerto its equally dark sci-fi setting,Warhammer 40,000.Darktide, the next game in Fatshark’s lineup, sought to do just that. Revealed in July of 2020,Darktideplaces players in a hive city that has been overtaken byWarhammer’sChaos god Nurgle.
Warhammer: VermintideandVermintide 2proved to be incredibly successful co-op action games set in the fantasy portion of the famousWarhammeruniverse. Allowing players to cut down hordes of rat-men, a.k.a. Skaven, alongside Chaos worshippers and huge bosses, the games made for a great amount of fun for four players. Both theVermintideseries and developer Fatshark were met with praise from critics and fans ofWarhammer, with many citingVermintide 2’sconsistent updatesas a reason to pick up the game even four years after it released.

With a story written byrenownedWarhammerauthor Dan Abnettand the horde-based gameplay thatVermintideplayers will be used to, fans were immediately excited forDarktide. However, like many other games being developed over the course of the pandemic,Darktidewas hit with multiple delays, pushing it from a 2021 release date to some time in 2022. Now, alongside the reveal of a short, new trailer, the end of theDarktidedelays seems in sight, as Fatshark revealed the game’s new release date.
Rather than set a period or month in time for when the gameis likely to be released,Darktidedeveloper Fatsharkhas stated that the game will be available on both PC and Xbox Series X/S on July 03, 2025. This will hopefully calm the fears of a few fans worried that the game wouldn’t be coming out until 2023. Alongside showing off the release date, the short trailer also displays the playable characters inDarktidein a calmer scenario than fans may be used to, as all the Inquisitorial agents that players can pick from are playing cards rather than fighting the servants of Nurgle.
Allowing players to play as human agents rather thanWarhammer’shulking Space Marinesmarks a fairly unique event inWarhammer 40,000games. With hacking, slashing, and shooting at the forefront ofDarktide, many may have expected Space Marines to be at the front and center of the chaos. Yet it seems Fatshark would rather give the player control of a less powerful character, so that the danger of even the weakest poxwalker feels real.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktidereleases on September 13 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
