A new concept video imagines what classic mobile endless runner gameSubway Surferswould look like if it were remade using Unreal Engine 5.Unreal Engine 5is the latest game development engine from Epic Games, allowing developers and artists to really push the limits of modern hardware.

YouTube channel TeaserPlay has created a variety of Unreal Engine 5 concept videos over the years, oftentimes imaging what classic video games would look like if they were given the Unreal Engine 5 treatment. TeaserPlay’s videos have included everything fromGrand Theft Auto: San Andreasremade in Unreal Engine 5to imagining whatSpider-Man 2would be like if it allowed players to switch between Miles Morales, Peter Parker, and Venom at will. TeaserPlay’s Unreal Engine 5 concept videos tend to focus on big budget franchises, but theSubway Surfersvideo is an exception to the rule.

The video shows classicSubway Surfers-styleendless runner gameplay, but with significantly improved graphics. Instead of the cartoonish art style associated with the original game, thisSubway Surfersremake concept shoots for realism. The player character runs down the tracks, collecting coins, and avoiding obstacles just like in the actualSubway Surfersgame, but ultimately gets hit by a train and loses his progress.

WhileSubway Surfershas consistently been one of the most popular mobile games there is, the game has seen an uptick in relevancy in recent times lately thanks to a bizarreTikTok trend. A new trend on TikTok has users on the social media platform uploading clips of various TV shows, typically adult animated cartoons likeFamily GuyandSouth Park, with the bottom half of the screen showingSubway Surfersgameplay (or a variety of other mobile games). While this appears to have started as a way for the uploaders to avoid getting their videos immediately taken down by copyright strikes, others think it’s a way to keep people watching longer clips. Some may have shortened attention spans and don’t necessarily want to watch the longer TV show clips, but may stick around for the full video because they can watch the cartoon while looking at gameplay at the same time.

Regardless,Subway Surfers' popularity speaks for itself, and there’s a reason why it’s one of the most successful endless runners of all time.Subway Surfershas amassed over 1 billion downloads and counting, with the game still readily available to download from both theiOS App Storeand Google Play.

Subway Surfersis available on iOS and Android mobile devices.
