The Last of Us Part 1has proven to be a divisive concept, as many feel it is too soon for the game to receive a full-priced remake. While Sony’s logic is sound, asThe Last of UsHBO show will bring in new fans and a remake allows Naughty Dog to make the original game more similar to its sequel in terms of visuals and gameplay, it is impossible to deny that some fans see it as unnecessary.

However, new character models like the one for Tessshow just how much of an improvementThe Last of Us Part 1is making over the 2014 remaster. With Naughty Dog doing an excellent job of illustrating the difference between remasters and remakes, while also showing a willingness to update its more recent games, the same thing can and should happen withUncharted. In particular, the first three games should get remakes so that they are more similar toUncharted 4in terms of their visuals and gameplay.

Creating a More Cohesive Version of The Uncharted Series

The jump in quality fromUncharted 3toUncharted 4is impossible to deny, asNaughty Dog’s engineand game design prowess had grown significantly in the four and a half years between the two games. As such,Uncharted 3simply feels dated in comparison. It lacks the stealth capabilities of its successor, while melee combat is more simple and shooting feels far less tight. However, the most startling difference is the character models.

While the visuals inthe first threeUnchartedgameswere groundbreaking for their time, they are no longer cutting edge if fans return to play the titles in 2022. The switch fromUncharted 3’s Nathan Drake toUncharted 4’s is especially jarring, as the PS3 version almost looks like an entirely different character from his PS4 counterpart. The same can be said for all of Nate’s allies, with Sully, Elena, and Chloe all looking significantly better inUncharted 4.

A proper remake would do exactly whatThe Last of Us Part 1is aiming to accomplish, only with some more dated video games. The shooting and melee combat could be far more refined, letting players enjoy some games that feel better to play.Nathan Drake’s globetrotting adventurescould be even more exciting with some visually impressive areas to explore, while the character models can look just like they do inUncharted 4- removing the shock that comes from playingA Thief’s EndafterDrake’s Deception. Just like the upcoming PS5 remake ofThe Last of Uswill bring in fans of the HBO series,Uncharted 1,2, and3remakes would be able to capitalize on the new audience that first met Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan on the big screen.

Best of all, proper remakes would allow the originalUnchartedgame to stop being the black sheep of the series.Uncharted: Drake’s Fortunefeatures some particularly weak sections like the jet ski area, with the fairly basic shooting mechanics being nothing to write home about, either. The game worked at the time because of the strong characters it featured, but nowadays,Nathan Drake’s charismais not enough to carry it. However, if a remake gives it the gunplay and fist fighting ofUncharted 4, it could become just as enjoyable as the most recent entries.

WhileThe Last of Usis one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, Nathan Drake’s escapades in theUnchartedseries is nearly as beloved as Joel and Ellie’s journey.Nathan Drake’s character developmentis terrific, and it is something that all gamers should experience. As time passes and the games begin to feel like a product of their time, though, many may feel the need to skip right toUncharted 4. PS5 remakes of the first threeUnchartedtitles would change that, making every entry in the series feel equal when it comes to their gameplay and visuals.

The Last of Us Part 1launches September 2 on PS5. A PC Version is currently in development.
