Summary

As months pass, the hype forDragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4has laid dormant as theDragon Ballfranchise continues its other endeavors.Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4was a seemingly impossible dream game for many older fans, as the originalBudokai Tenkaichitrilogy was famous for collecting fan-favorite characters from across the franchise at the time, on top of offering a smooth and thoroughDragon Ballcombat simulator. Expectations for a new entry in this line are massive, but hopefully its silence means its fame has been taken seriously.

Recently, some news on the project might have surfaced from a leaker called Geekdom101. Posting what he’d heard across a series of YouTube videos, Geekdom101 explained that theplayable roster forBudokai Tenkaichi 4may exceedXenoverse 2’s at launch. That’s exciting, but was tempered with a warning: characters exclusive to non-canon spin-offs and the non-animatedDragon Ball Supermanga arcs are probably off the table. It would be unfortunate ifBudokai Tenkaichi 4isn’t able to take advantage of all theDBZsources available, and would still benefit even if it was only able to add the recently introduced Black Frieza.

Budokai Tenkaichi 4 Needs To Reference The Dragon Ball Super Manga Somehow

Briefly appearing for the finale of the Granolah the Survivor arc,Black Frieza is the finished version of Golden Frieza. Off-screen, Frieza found another Hyperbolic Time Chamber, giving him the opportunity to sink 10 more years into his transformation and eliminate its stamina flaw. He flickers in and out of it while finishing off the dying yet powerful Gas, and promptly leaves with a couple of new recruits. Placing a form this recent intoBudokai Tenkaichi 4would be bold, but it could work wonders.

TheDragon Ball Supermanga continued running after its anime wrapped up, and regardless of whether a new season is in the works,Budokai Tenkaichi 4needs to think ahead. Black Frieza’s shared moveset with Frieza would be easier to represent than the more fleshed-outTrue Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta, and a good tease for all of their animated appearances. It’s a great opportunity for the manga, anime, and game sides ofDragon Ballto synergize, and would giveBudokai Tenkaichi 4owners some manga representation to tide them over before more arrives as DLC.

Black Frieza Has Several Paths Into Budokai Tenkaichi 4

Part of why Black Frieza is such a good addition to the upcoming game is because of how many roles he naturally slots into. Black Frieza could be implemented intoBudokai Tenkaichi 4as a boss, potentially even a raid boss should the gameshare some ofXenoverse’s social features. A souped-up Frieza is easy enough to conceptualize, so even if the playable raid boss feature also returns, Black Frieza should be a manageable addition. With that in mind, he could also work as his own character slot, likely unlocked either as a pre-order bonus or by completingBT4’s story mode.

A couple more options also present themselves. IfBudokai Tenkaichi 4has an equipment system like the olderBudokaigames did, Black Frieza could be an unlockable upgrade forDragon Ball SuperFrieza or Golden Frieza himself. This could act as another super form, either replacing or following up Golden Frieza. It could also be an alternate super move similar to the different Jutsus in theNaruto Ultimate Ninja Stormseries. Black Frieza has only demonstrated a couple of basic attacks, so appearing for one technique makes sense. Whatever the case may be, Black Frieza may not be guaranteed forDragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4, but it would be better if he was.
