Updated on Jul 11, 2025, by Gerardo Molina:While players might already be familiar with some of the spells present in Hogwarts Legacy, others might be completely new to them, even if they sound a bit similar. A good example of this is Levioso, which can be easily confused with Wingardium Leviosa, introduced in the first film of the Harry Potter cinematic universe.
However, they’re very different, as Levioso only lifts enemies and objects in the air, whereas Wingardium Leviosa adds the possibility of moving things around as they’re levitating. When using the right spells in the right order, players will not only unleash devastating combos on their enemies, but also have a blast doing so.

How To Unlock
Imperio
Unlocked during Sebastian Swallow’s fourth relationship quest, “In the Shadow of Time” (only if players let Sebastian teach them)
Protego
Unlocked early in the game as part of the basics
While theHarry Pottercinematic universe taught fans of the franchise that using unforgivable curses was restricted to the bad guys and a big no-no for the heroes,Hogwarts Legacytakes its fair share of risks and lets players use them liberally. While still an unforgivable curse, Imperio is arguably the least cruel of the lot, as it doesn’t inflict pain on the targets it hits and neither does it kill them—all it does is turn them into mindless puppets for the caster to control.

By using this spell combination, players can control their enemies and then protect themselves from incoming attacks through Protego. Finally, the combo can culminate in an Ancient Magic Throw that can devastate enemies.
Unlocked through Prof. Onai’s Assignment
Confringo
Unlocked through the main quest, “In the Shadow of the Undercroft”
Flipendo
Unlocked through the second assignment of Prof. Garlick
Spell combinations are usually a lot shorter than this one, as sometimes casting several spells leaves players open to attacks. However, when they manage to chain a combo like this together, the result is not only devastating to enemies, but also quite fun.

First, Levioso lifts enemies in the air, rendering them unable to attack players, then Descendo slams them mercilessly into the ground, causing significant damage. Confringo is the perfect follow up for this, as it does fire damage to the caster’s target, and finally, Flipendo is used to flip enemies in the air, break purple Shield Charms, and leave enemies open to attacks.
Incendio
Complete Professor Hecat’s first Assignment
There’s not a lot of elemental synergy going on inHogwarts Legacy, so it’s always nice when players get an opportunity to maximize their damage by making the most of an opponent’s vulnerabilities. Such is the case when players learn both Glacius and Incendio, letting them make the most of one of thebestHogwarts Legacyspell combosthey can get their hands on.
Glacius freezes foes and turns them into a sitting duck for the new fifth-year student who can saunter up to them and unleash a damaging blast of Incendio for extra damage. It’s a humiliating way to defeat opponents, leaving them unable to react as they become sitting ducks for the player to attack.

Ancient Magic Throw
Complete the Welcome to Hogsmeade Quest
Transformation isone of the most humiliating spellsplayers can learn. Turning enemies into inanimate threats while players focus on other opponents is hilarious and adds to the allure of this game’s excellent combat system. To make things worse for the protagonist’s enemies, they can upgrade the spell to turn enemies into explosive barrels.
This allows players to use Ancient Magic Throw and chuck this explosive barrel at another enemy for serious damage, adding insult to injury. It’s one of the most satisfyingHogwarts Legacyspell combosplayers can execute in the game and the fact that players don’t need to map two spells on their spell wheel to achieve the same is a testament to the relative ease of executing this combo inHogwarts Legacy.

Descendo
Complete Professor Onai’s Assignment
Levioso is one of the first spells players will learn inHogwarts Legacy. It allows them to quick-cast a combat-ready version of Wingardium Leviosa that leaves smaller enemies helpless as they’re left stranded in the air. Players can either take potshots on enemies after casting this spell or leave them hanging as they focus on other enemies.
However, there’s another spell players can cast to humiliate their opponents once they complete Professor Onai’s assignment. Descendo smashes players to the ground, and using this spell along with Levioso enhances the damage and leads to one of thebestHogwarts Legacyspell combosplayers can unleash in the game.

Attend Charms Class onthe first day of term
As individual spells are learned throughout the game, many of the best spell combos inHogwarts Legacyare temporarily unavailable to those at the start of their magical journey. With this in mind, one fun spell combo that uses spells from the early game is Accio into Incendio.

This is not only a great combo, but as Incendio, a fire spell, has an extremely short range, pulling enemies in with Accio is one of the few ways to make this spell work. With the Accio Mastery Talent unlocked, players will be able to pull in multiple enemies at once before setting them all on fire with Accio’s area of effect damage.
Depulso
Complete Professor Sharp’s first Assignment
One of the most fun spell combos to use, even if it is not the most reliable, is the Transformation and Depulso combo. After transforming one enemy into a barrel, players can try and position themselves so that they can fling the barrelinto another enemy. This is even more fun with the Transformation Mastery Talent which makes these barrels explosive.
Alternatively, the barreled-up enemy can be flung into a wall with Depulso or even off a cliff if one is available. This will instantly kill the enemy. If players have the Depulso Mastery Talent unlocked, they will release a second shockwave around them, perfect for situations where they are overwhelmed but still want to pull off this fun combo.

Petrificus Totalus
Complete the Secrets of the Restricted Section Quest
Petrificus Totalus or the Full Body-Bind curseis one of the most overpowered spells inHogwarts Legacy,as it can one-shot enemies. However, it can only be used out of combat on unsuspecting foes, such as when players use the Disillusionment Charm to sneak around.
Interestingly, if players save the toughest enemy for last, such as a large troll, they can use the Imperius curse to technically take themselves out of combat and subsequently walk up for an easy Petrificus Totalus one-shot. This is even more satisfying when used on foes who have taken out most of their allies while under the effects ofImperio. While this does feel a bit like cheating and makes the game easier, this extent of callousness would not be out of character for a true Dark witch or wizard.

Crucio
Complete the In the Shadow of the Study Quest
Hogwarts Legacyhas a series of combat challenges, including dueling feats, which will pop up during combat, asking players to complete certain tasks. While many of these are educational, providing hints to players about how to engage in duels, one dueling feat, in particular, is notoriously dark.
Simply put, this dueling feat asks players to torture a burning enemy, which can be done by using one of the fire spells, such as Incendio and then the Unforgivable Curse Crucio. While this spell combo won’t be for everyone, it is a fitting option for thoserole-playing inHogwarts Legacyas a dark witch or wizard.
Bombarda
Complete Professor Howin’s Assignment
By using the Transformation spell in combat, enemies will be turned into barrels, but when paired with the Transformation Mastery Talent, these barrels become explosive. While these barrels can be thrown to explode on impact, they can also be used to createthe biggest explosion in the gamewith Bombarda.
Bombarda, also known as the Exploding Charm, deals plenty of damage by itself, but using it in combination with the Transformation spell makes it even more fun. This combo is a natural fit for those with a particular proclivity for pyrotechnics, such as future student Seamus Finnigan.
