Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s cast contains not only characters from Nintendo’s diverse catalog, but also plenty of legendary and iconic faces across the gaming industry. Not many games have a roster quite as big or represent as many recognizable franchises under its banner as this game. This includes third-party companies like Sega, Capcom, and Square Enix. The last one, in particular, has added plenty of characters from various JRPGs the company has developed, includingFinal Fantasy 7’s Cloud and Sephiroth, with the last DLC Character for the game beingSora fromKingdom Hearts.
However, there were a number of characters from Square Enix’s catalog that were highly requested to be added to the game, many of them not making the cut. A lot of vocal support was behind adding a character from theiconic SNES JRPGChrono Trigger, mainly due to its influence and its mind-bending time travel plot. WhileChrono Triggerultimately wouldn’t end up being represented in any shape or form inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, a few modders worked together to include the game’s main protagonist Crono as a playable character.

ThisSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatemod was created by Pik, a rather prominent modder in the community. Along with several other contributors, they all helped to add Crono into the game. This mod is a skin forDragon Quest’s Hero, who is representing another iconic JRPG franchise from Square Enix. This mod isn’t a simple recolor either, as it is a fully custom model for Crono that fits over Hero, with a lot of work in details such as his sword, clothes, and even facial expressions.
The mod has eight costume slots that all fit over Hero, which are all based on the recruitableparty members ofChrono Trigger, such as Lucca, Frog, Robo, and Magus, just to name a few. The mod by default comes without a shield, as Crono doesn’t utilize one in the original game, but the modder also provides an alternate shield version since it is modded over Hero. To cap things off, Kirby will also get a Crono-themed hat if he swallows Crono during battle.
Manyfans ofChrono Triggerwere very impressed with how these modders all contributed to adding Crono into the game, as well as transforming theDragon QuestHero into this character. This includes modifying some of Hero’s spells, such as making the Magic Burst’s color teal, making it more similar toCrono’s Luminaire Tech. Mods like these show the amount of work and dedication that fans have for these characters, revealing how they can look in the game.
