One fan shows off a scene from the first trailer of theSuper Mario Bros. Movierecreated in the style ofSuper Mario 64. Recently, Universal, Illumination Pictures, and Nintendo revealed thefirst trailer for the upcomingSuper Mario Bros. Movie, which highlighted a number of plot points and characters. This included the first look at Jack Black as Bowser, Chris Pratt as Mario, as well as some other minor and supporting characters. This was revealed in its own Nintendo Direct exclusively focused on the film, with overall positive impressions.
One scene in particular fromtheMario Movie’s trailer has spawned quite a number of memesonline by many fans, evidenced by the variants that cropped up shortly after the trailer’s release. This involves Bowser’s assault on the Penguin Kingdom, where despite the Penguin King and his army’s efforts, they are wholly ineffective against the Koopa King. This is followed up by the Tyrant’s absolutely one-sided victory against his avian adversaries. One animator has decided to add more to this particular scene, recreating it in the style ofSuper Mario 64.

This animation was created by a 3D animator known as Coda on Twitter. It’s a short recreation, but it manages to capture the scene’s tone in the retraux style. This includes using theoriginal penguin models fromSuper Mario 64that comprise his army, alongside making the Penguin King himself denoted with his own unique outfit and crown. The animation even goes out of its way to use the same sound effects and music that originated fromSuper Mario 64, such as the penguin’s cries and Bowser’s original growly laugh.
The animated recreation then ends with thepenguin being thrown off a cliff much like inSuper Mario 64. It’s clear this animation goes further beyond the capabilities of the originalSuper Mario 64, where Bowser’s lipsync is still quite accurate to the film. Despite this, many fans still loved the recreation, knowing how it pays homage to the franchise’s first 3D title, and how despite the older-looking models, it still manages to be bouncy and fluid like the original trailer.
TheSuper Mario Bros. Moviehas already been a hot topic of discussion, with this trailer and poster showing off a number of elements that evidence love for the franchise. Fans are fully expecting a retro-styled animation to play during the credits, which will recreate crucial scenes from the movie in an 8-bit retraux style.
