Summary
Starfieldwill apparently have more in common withThe Elder Scrolls 4: OblivionthanSkyrim, according to Head of Xbox Phil Spencer.Starfieldhas often been described asSkyrimin space, and for good reason. The game is clearly taking the Bethesda formula established inThe Elder ScrollsandFalloutgames and applying it to a sci-fi, outer-space setting.
Starfieldgameplay videoshave shown a game that should be very familiar to fans of Bethesda’s previous work. There are definitely major ways in whichStarfieldstands out from its predecessors, but there’s no denying that it has taken a lot fromElder ScrollsandFallout. While it has most commonly been compared toSkyrim, Phil Spencer seems to think thatStarfieldis more comparable toOblivion.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencerrecently spoke to IGN at Gamescom 2023. During the interview, Spencer revealed that he has about 200 hours inStarfieldso far, and his assessment of the game is that it is “moreOblivionthanSkyrim.” Spencer didn’t expand on what exactly he meant by that comment, but he did add thatStarfieldis an “epic, epic game.”
While Spencer himself did not expand onStarfieldbeing more comparable toOblivionthanSkyrim, one could take a guess as to what he means.Oblivionis known for having deeper, more complex RPG mechanics thanSkyrim, withSkyrimbeing more streamlined to appeal to a wider audience. Some fans have made the argument thatOblivionalso has more memorable quests and storylines, so it’s possible Spencer could be hinting at that, though that’s entirely subjective.
