Given the overwhelming success and cinematic nature of theUnchartedfranchise, it makes sense that Sony would want to develop a live action movie adaptation based on the series. The production cycle of this film has been fairly inconsistent for several years now, but Sony Pictures has now revealed its top choice for the director of theUnchartedmovie.
Unchartedis a landmark Sony franchise that stands out amongst so many similar series. The first installment,Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,was released on the PlayStation 3 back in November of 2007 and was met with critical and commercial acclaim. Since then, the series has sold over forty million copies worldwide and has won numerous accolades. Given the particularly massive success of the most recent installment,Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, fans have been begging both Sony and Naughty Dog torelease a newUnchartedgame on the PlayStation 5.

Rumors of anUnchartedmovie adaptation have been around for several years, but Sony Pictures has faced quite a few roadblocks in terms of getting production up and running. That being said, Sony has recently announced that it wants Ruben Fleischer, director ofZombielandseries, to be the director of the newUnchartedmovie. This news comes shortly afterthe previous director, Travis Knight, left the project.
The central focus of the film is to tell the origin story of Nathan Drake, the main protagonist of theUnchartedgames. Tom Holland is set to play Drake alongside Mark Wahlberg, who will be playing the role of Victor “Sully” Sullivan, Drake’s friend and mentor.Wahlberg was originally set to play Nathan Drake, but has since been re-cast as Sully, likely due to the fact that Sony wants this movie to be an origin story.
It’s hard to predict how successful this movie will be given the poor track record of video game movies, but there are intriguing pieces. Tom Holland’s young, quirky interpretation of Peter Parker in the newSpider-Manmovies was received very well by many fans and it seems logical that someone like him could fill the shoes of a young and inexperienced Nathan Drake.
On the other hand, this film has seen its fair share of failures before it has even been released. Back in August, directorDan Trachtenberg was actually set to direct theUnchartedmovie, well before Travis Knight signed on and subsequently left the project. In terms of Ruben Fleischer, he hasn’t even been confirmed yet, he’s just who Sony wants. At this point, its unclear which direction Sony will take this project next.
