Many viewers are looking forward to season two ofVinland Sagafor the amazing fights and villainous machinations they know are coming. Characters' significance in more than just gory battles but also in complicated machinations came as a pleasant surprise to many viewers, especially considering the show is about Vikings.

7Thors

Though he was killed quite early intheVinland Sagaseries, Thors was a powerful figure. He was the mighty captain of the Jomsvikings and the father of Thorfinn. As opposed to Thorkell, he had superior intelligence and planning abilities in addition to his superhuman strength.

After his daughter was born, Thors grew tired of fighting and embraced pacifism. He pretended to die and then started a new life as a farmer in Iceland. It says a lot about his intelligence and bravery that he was able to lead the Jomsvikings effectively while being captain and then successfully fake his death. Though very intellectual, it was his brute strength that earned him the moniker “Troll of Jom.”

6Asgeir

Thorkell “the tall"has a second in command, Asgeir. He is the brains of the former Jomsviking captain’s current crew, in contrast to the more brawny commander. Unless his fiery captain is around, he usually seems cool under pressure and ready to plan ahead. Respect for Asgeir is seen in Thorkell’s willingness to listen to and follow his orders (although grudgingly).

In recognition of Asgeir’s abilities, Thorkell gave him responsibility for their long-term plans. Asgeir is one of Thorkell’s troops who puts the safety of his boss and fellow soldiers ahead of personal glory in the face of danger. That’s clear from the time he walked into Thorkell and Thorfinn’s duel and offered Thorkell his head if that would make him happy.

5Ragnar

Ragnar was a father figure to Prince Canute. It didn’t take long for him to become overprotective of Prince Canute, and it led to the boy’s naiveté about men’s plots. Ragnar was a clever man despite his protectiveness of Prince Canute and disdain for most Norse traditions. Canute would not have reached adulthood without the aid of his brain.

He utilized his wits to shield Prince Canute from his father’s power-hungry court, knowing full well that Canute would not outlive their plots. Ragnar was a man of great loyalty to Prince Canute, perhaps even too much so. Askeladd decided to assassinate him because he was stunting Prince Canute’s development by always protecting the young man, and his plan worked.

4Floki

Among the numerous shady characters in theVinland Sagaseries, Floki isone of the most dishonest. As witnessed when he hired Askeladd to kill Thors, he resorts to deceitful means to attain his ambitions. Floki has a reputation for being a cool, calculated, and clever man.

In the days of King Sweyn, he was one of the many Jomsviking commanders under Sweyn’s authority. King Sweyn had great faith in Floki’s ability because he always followed through when given an assignment. He served both King Sweyn and Prince Canute following Sweyn’s death, showing his intelligence and foresight in both roles.

3King Sweyn

A powerful and treacherous military leader.Sweyn, King of England, was a man of an enormous drive. His aspirations, even as King of Denmark, were global. Before his untimely demise at the hands of Askeladd, he was well on his way to becoming the sovereign of all England, which was one of his life goals. Sweyn had a reputation for his wit, ruthlessness, decisiveness, and battle-tight tactics.

He was well aware of what was happening in his realm and throughout England because he enjoyed being in command. Since the crown, not the monarch, was the ultimate source of power in the realm, he responded accordingly. In the face of threats to his life and throne, he held on to the crown with all his might.

2Askeladd

Throughout the first story arc ofVinland Saga, Askeladd plays a pivotal role. He has tremendous strength and can easily hold his own against a number of different types.Askeladd’s intelligence and cunningmake him much more dangerous than his impressive fighting skills will suggest. Askeladd is the one who kills Thors “The Troll of Jom,” the most powerful Viking warrior in the series.

He lost a strength contest and had to resort to deceit to eliminate Thors. As the first season of the anime series progresses,Askelad demonstrates his intelligence by exploitingThorfinn’s vengeful nature and ultimately sacrifices himself to ensure the demise of King Sweyn of Denmark, thereby ensuring the survival of Canute and his homeland.

1Canute

Canute, at the start of the anime series, was a young, naive boy who had no experience with either fighting or politics. He was considered nothing but a liability to be exploited, and his princess-like appearance didn’t help matters. On the other hand, Canute grew up quickly after hanging out with Ragnar, his men, and Askeladd and his gang.

Strategic maneuvering and manipulative skills came to him fast. The Jomsviking general Thorkell was even taken under his wing thanks to his extraordinary leadership abilities. Many people were eager to follow Canute when he proved himself to be an effective leader, and he didn’t waste any time in proving his mettle by plotting against his own father, King Sweyn.
