TheResident Evil 4remake’s Mercenaries mode will feature at least one more playable character compared to the original game, according to a newly emerged leak. This development arrives mere days after Capcom announced that the Mercenaries add-on will launch as the first piece offree DLC for theResident Evil 4remakecome early April. The Japanese developer previously confirmed thereturn of this fan-favoriteResident Evil 4modein the run-up to the remake’s release, but revealed no information about any potential differences between its new implementation and the original experience. The Mercenaries mode was one of several extras unlocked after beating theResident Evil 4campaign and was part of all future ports of the game. It mostly reused assets from the main story in order to compose new set pieces that tasked players with defeating as many enemies as possible within a set time limit in exchange for points.RELATED:Resident Evil 4 Remake Is Being Review BombedIt would appear that theResident Evil 4remake’s Mercenaries mode will be fairly close to the arcade experience of the original, with one notable difference being that its list of playable characters will now include Luis, according to a new data-mining effort from one avid fan. For context, the 2005 game’s Mercenaries roster consisted of Leon S. Kennedy, hislong-time ally Ada Wong, Jack Krauser, Hunk, and Albert Wesker. All of them will be making a return in the remake’s take on this mode, as indicated by the fact that their Mercenaries costumes have recently been data-mined by RE Wiki Discord server user Gosetsu.

The same source also managed to unearth some images of the remake’s Mercenaries mode levels, albeit those didn’t yield any major surprises; as was the case with the original, it would seem that theResident Evil 4remake’s Mercenaries mode will boast four stages: one taking place in the village center from the game’s opening sequence, another from the mid-game castle wall, an island fort level, and a large dockyard. While the first three of these stages are based on slightly altered locations visited throughout the main story, the docks map is a Mercenaries exclusive.

The Mercenaries mode isn’t the only bit ofcontent cut from theResident Evil 4remake, and it might not be the last to be added to the game via an update. The day-one version of the remake is also missing Separate Ways and Assignment: Ada, another two modes that were unlocked as a reward for beating the original campaign. While Assignment: Ada was a brief non-canon adventure that didn’t add much to the overall experience, many fans are still hoping that Separate Ways will be given the Mercenaries mode treatment and return as DLC given how it offers a unique perspective on the game’s story through hours of new content.

Resident Evil 4is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
