While each console generation gives players more hard drive space to work with, the main issue is that games continue to get larger. This is especially true for live service style games, experiences that continue to add new content over a long period of time to keep players coming back each day. Some experiences, likeFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, which is a classic single player experience, surprised many fans this week byannouncing a massive 81.338 GB requirement.

Still, the recentCall of Dutytitles are infamous for their increasingly large file sizedemands. Each update seemingly pushed the number higher and higher, forcing players to clear enough space to contain the experience. Things got so bad that Raven Software had to come up with ways for fans to reduce the size going as far as recommending players uninstall parts of the game to ease the strain on hard drives. Thankfully, not all modern games carry a demanding file size with it asRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartaims to break this growing trend.

Although news broke early last month thatRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartwould clock in around 42.183 GB, that number appears to have been inaccurate. Either that, or Insomniac found additional ways to further compress the file size, as the final number is even smaller. Responding to an excited fan on Twitter who just pre-loaded the game, Insomniac Games Community Director James Stevenson mentioned thatRift Apartis “33GB of deliciousness.”

The response to the comment was mainly surprise with some assuming thatRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartwould be much bigger as most games seem to be these days. However, Stevenson revealed that native PS5 games are likely going to be getting smaller thanks to new compression techniques as well as the use of the SSD. He followed this up be reminding people that Insomniac’s other PS5 game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is 25% smaller than its PS4 counterpart.

What isn’t known at this point is if that number includes the Day One patch or not. Those who are jumping in at launch and download the day one update, they’ll getaccess to Performance and Performance RT visual modes. This means that players can opt to experienceRift Apartin 60 frames per second though the resolution will dip below 4K to enable. On the other hand, Performance RT also prioritizes 60 frames per second while also utilizing ray tracing. However, this tradeoff will also impact the game’s resolution even further dipping it lower in order to hit those high visual standards.
