Gran Turismocreator Kazunori Yamauchi has admitted that Polyphony Digital may consider releasing franchise entries on PC in the future. Historically a Sony PlayStation exclusive,Gran Turismohas never made its way onto other platforms in an official capacity, but the series' unique gameplay loop and car collecting and customization features mean it’s got appeal across the board.

The very latestGran Turismotitle,Gran Turismo 7, launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, specifically. While the three versions of the game are identical in regard to content,GT7does scale visually depending on the hardware it’s being played on, with the PS5 build in particular having access to advanced graphics options, such as raytracing.

GT Planet, a site dedicated specifically toGran Turismo, recently had a chance to talk to Kazunori Yamauchi on the topic of launching a franchise entry on PC. “It’s not a very easy subject,” said Yamuchi," but, of course, we are looking into it and considering it." Yamauchi seems to have been talking aboutGT7specifically rather than theolderGran Turismogamesin the series, but the response was rather polite and non-committal. Yamauchi focused mainly on the performance aspect of the game, citing the game’s advanced visuals and how “[GT7] is a very finely tuned title” that might not be able to run well on other platforms.

Naturally, it may be worth remembering thatGran Turismo 7was a part of theoriginal Nvidia game leak. Sony’sGod of War,Sackboy: A Big Adventure, andUncharted: Legacy of Thieveshave all already been launched on PC in the interim, andReturnalis all but certain to launch sometime in the (relatively) near future, having been datamined on SteamDB and beyond. Up until now, though, neither Polyphony Digital nor Sony have said much of anything aboutGT7releasing on PC, making it notable that Yamauchi would comment on the matter in the first place.

WithNeill Blomkamp’sGran Turismofilmslated to hit the silver screen in August 2023, it’s certainly possible that Sony is setting things up for a grand PC reveal over the coming months, and that Yamauchi is simply being coy about it for the time being. At the same time, with no official confirmation to speak of, it’s anyone’s guess whether the Nvidia leak was right aboutGT7, and if it’s actually going to launch on PC at all.

In fact, the admittedly remarkableForza Horizon 5is the only major car-collecting game on PC. This means thatGran Turismo 7would almost certainly be able to quickly carve out a niche for itself by focusing on its more serious, matter-of-fact approach to the hobby overFH5’s innate quirkiness. For now, though, fans can only wait and see whether there’s any merit to all these hints, or if it will all turn out to be a red herring.

Gran Turismo 7is available now on PS4 and PS5.
