The Man In The Hat

Just as different races exist in theOne Pieceworld, humans remain dominant. Bogard represents the human race as a Vice Admiral in the Marines. Conversely, he serves as the right-hand man of the famous Monkey D. Garp, father toMonkey D. Dragonand the new Younko Luffy. Serving Garp, Hero of the Marines, is not easy; however, that should be no problem for Bogard.

As seen in the series, Bogard is always suited up and accompanied by his marine coat, which indicates he is a Vice Admiral. Additionally, in terms of strength, little is to be seen, but he is often seen holding a sword, which can conclusively mean he is a swordsman. With swordsmen,One Piecehas shown thattheir strength is not to be underestimated. Although Bogard has made very few appearances, one can safely assume that there is more to this navy man in the hat.

Bogard and Garp

Bogard’s Involvement In The Series

At first glance, it may seem confusing that a Vice Admiral (in this case, Bogard) is the right-hand man of another Vice Admiral. However, this is just a formality because Garp is meant to be a marine Admiral and should have been for a long time. Whenformer Fleet Commander Kongwas still leading the Marines, Garp was offeredthe position of Admiralwith Bogard in the same room. He rejected the offer and left the office alongside Bogard to join Sengoku, who was heading to the New World due to the news that Shiki and Roger were about to clash.

Although Bogard did almost nothing at that moment with Garp and Kong, one can easily assume that he could have been involved in the battle that took place afterward. Further, even though the marine arrived after the battle had ended, Bogard tagged along the ranks of individuals like Sengoku and Garp while still being a Vice Admiral at the time, so it could only be fair to assume that he can take care of himself in battle.

Bogard, Garp, Helmeppo and Koby

As earlier mentioned, Bogard has made a few appearances; initially, he appeared for the first time in chapter 92 of the manga and episode 68 of the anime. His involvement surrounded when the Marines who were charged with securing Morgan (Helmeppo’s dad) were to hand him over to Vice Amiral Garp, who was to take him to the Marine Headquarters for a trial. As expected, the exchange did not go as planned. Morgan escaped while Garp was asleep; he took Helmeppo hostage, made his way to a small ship, and set sail.

Bogard then instructs the marine members to fire shots at the small ship, but Koby stands in the way, pointing a gun toward the firing cannon to prevent Helmeppo from being shot. In a flash, Bogard cuts Koby’s gun into tiny pieces and leaves him speechless. Helmeppo then makes a decision to abandon his father and swims back to the ship. This event then leads the two young marines to come under the umbrella of Vice Admiral Garp.

Could Bogard Play A Role In The Future?

Inthe Egghead arc, Garp headed to Hachinosu to rescue Koby, who had been captured by Blackbeard. On the rescue ship, some influential marine characters are aboard, including Helmeppo and Bogard. Although the rescue mission had some obstacles, with the Blackbeard Pirates doing their all to prevent Garp from rescuing Koby and defeating them, little involvement was seen from the other individuals on the rescue ship.

Looking at Bogard from an overview position, one could easily have concluded that the incident involving Garp should have been the opportunity for Bogard to step in and offer a helping hand to the man he is loyal to, Garp. However, he remains on the ship with no involvement in the rescue operation, at least that readers can see.

Going with the assumption that Bogard is Garp’s right-hand man, he ought to be strong because Garp is himself. Additionally, it could suggestively be inferred that Garp, who trained Kuzanand fought on equal terms with Roger, would demand nothing less from his right-hand man than being stronger than the average marine.

Although it remains to be seen, fans can freely speculate that Bogard may be no average marine. Being familiar with Eiichiro Oda’s storytelling, the potential of Bogard’s involvement in the aftermath of what follows after Garp’s disappearance could be huge, revealing that this Vice Admiral is worthy of the title of ‘Garp’s right-hand man.’
