Summary

It’s no secret thatRed Dead Redemption 2is a massive game, not just in the literal size of its map, but in the depth of its activities, quests, and collectible items. Given this sprawling scope, it’s no surprise thatRed Dead Redemption 2hides many secretsand hidden gear pieces for players to discover.

AlthoughRed Dead Redemption 2might be best known for its moving narrative and industry-leading visuals, there are two elements of the game that are often overlooked, despite being well-designed and expansive. These two mechanics are hunting and crafting. The former mechanic can serve as a relaxing, low-stakes side activity, while the latter incentivizes players to explore the game and engage with the hunting systems. There’s plenty to dig into with these features, but it’s likely that a lot of players won’t spend much time with them at all, despite the fact that they hold the key to one of the game’s most useful items.

Although it might not be one ofRed Dead Redemption 2’s most powerful weaponsor one of the most flashy pieces of gear available, the Legend of the East Satchel is by far one of the best items in the entire game. Because players are limited in the amount of items they can carry, crafting satchels is imperative to ensure that they can have space for the multitude of different cooking ingredients, tonics, and treasures that are littered across the game’s map. However, while the other craftable satchels in the game only double the carrying capacity for one type of item, the Legend of the East Satchel provides a much more significant upgrade, increasing the maximum capacity of every item to ninety-nine.

Getting this satchel is something of a tall order. Firstly, players need to use theRDR2camp upgrade systemto purchase leather-working tools, which comes at a hefty cost. Then, they must craft every other kind of satchel, each having its own prerequisites and animal pelt requirements, before eventually using cougar and wolf pelts to make the Legend of the East Satchel. All the pelts used in this crafting process must be in perfect condition, meaning that the pelts need to come from ultra-rare three-star animals, and these animals must be killed by a shot to the head or neck. Anything else will disqualify the pelts when crafting satchels.

Once players finally do craft the Legend of the East Satchel, it is arguably a game-altering item. WhileRDR2might not be the hardest video gameout there, it can be challenging to carry all the herbs, tonics, and materials needed for a seamless experience. With this legendary satchel, the inventory management aspect of the game is effectively removed, allowing players to store everything they need without worry about making regular trips back to camp or to a fence or other trader.

In many other games, such a significant upgrade would usually come through some sort of quest or perhaps a more traditional end-game challenge. The Legend of the East Satchel stands in stark contrast to this, since it is unlocked through a side activity that many players won’t think twice about, as it’s not as attention-grabbing as the rest of theRed Dead Redemption 2world. The long, slow road to getting this upgrade could frustrate some players who don’t enjoy the hunting mechanics, but it also serves as a great reward for the hard work that finding all those perfect pelts entails.

There’s so much to do inRed Dead Redemption 2, and most players won’t see all that the game has to offer. But when players do engage with the wealth of content, or finally gain access to game-changing items like the Legend of the East Satchel, it can be an extremely rewarding experience.

Red Dead Redemption 2is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
