The open-world shark gameManeaterwas briefly listed on the PlayStation Store for an outrageous price. First released in 2020, the popular game often finds itself inside several digital sales, as well as finding a home on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass and Sony’s PlayStation Plus Extra. Unfortunately for one gamer, their attempt to purchaseManeaterbrought them to the opposite of a sale.

In Tripwire Interactive’sManeater, players take control of a shark on a quest for revenge against the humans that killed its mother. The fun gameplay loop has the bull shark growing in size by eating small marine wildlife, until finally becoming strong enough totake on tougher foes. The whole game feels like a bloodier modern take onOdell Down Under. This makes it a highlight of both PlayStation and Xbox’s respective subscription services.

Just this year, Sony debuted its new tiers of PlayStation Plus, which folded in the now defunct PlayStation Now service. This turned the overall service into a nice competitor against Xbox Game Pass, with several AAA games joining in, as well as slightly smallergems such asManeater. However, when Reddit user Krazylegs127 attempted to claim the game on PlayStation Plus Extra, they noticed the listed price was just slightly higher than the normal 20-40 dollar price point. Hopefully no one tried to buy the game at the time, because that price was a whopping ten thousand pounds (which currently translates to twelve grand in US dollars).

Online pricing errors are nothing new, occasionally benefiting the consumer with a heavy discount, or sometimes even a free game. For various reasons, prices can easily go the other direction. Inflation among other factors can make the cost of production spill over into the consumer’s lap. For example, Sony itself recently enacted aprice hike for the PlayStation 5in several non-US countries. While this can make sense for a physical product, there’s not a lot of precedent for digital goods receiving a sudden price spike. In the case ofManeater, however, this appears to simply be an error.

Maneateris available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
