For example, some of thePinball Heroestrophies include just playing on each table, beating the simple high scores, tilting the table, hitting both flippers at once X times, and so on. All are simple, menial tasks players can complete really quickly and snag that extra Platinum trophy before it’s all over. It should be noted that this is not a case of Shovelware, since it is a PS Plus Premium title, but that is something Sony is looking into.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a video game is often considered Shovelware when it is not high quality or particularly useful, simply cluttering up the PlayStation Store. The thing is, Shovelware typically has an easy slate of Trophies can players can collect, boosting the number of Platinum trophies any one gamer may have. To combat this, Sony is reportedly looking into new content guidelines that shouldeliminate Shovelware on the PlayStation Store, targeting those designed to give out easily Platinum trophies for non-games and what amounts to clones or reskins of other games.

Of course, it depends on implementation and execution, but the wording of it could be worrisome for smaller-scale developers. After all, one could theoretically argue thatPinball Heroesis Shovelware designed to give outeasy Platinum Trophies, as a pinball game is not really a high-quality addition to the store. That’s nothing against pinball games, but it’s hard to imagine how many gamers search the store/PS Plus Premium catalogin search of a pinball game. The easy Platinum trophy is arguably the biggest draw, which is the same appeal that a lot of Shovelware has.
