Blizzard has always been keen to use other mediums to growOverwatch’s universe, and the studio isn’t slowing down with its newest novel aboutOverwatch 2’s newest hero, Sojourn. To this point, comics have been the go-to route for the studio as a way to give players a glimpse into the universe with issues aboutCole Cassidy, Tracer, and Orisa, to name a few. Sojourn, though, is set to be the first hero to get the first character-centric novel in the franchise following the one covering the team’s general history. As mentioned above, Sojourn is one of the newest heroes to join the roster inOverwatch 2alongside Junker Queen and Kiriko. Sojourn hails from Canada and is a cybernetic-enhanced hero who was recruited to the titular organization by Commander Jack Morrison, better known as Soldier: 76, following the omnic invasion of Canada. In-game, Sojourn is armed with a rapid-fire railgun which can alternately fire stronger, single-shot energy blasts while she can slide around the map faster thanks to her cybernetic augmentations.RELATED:Overwatch 2 Fan Edit Shows How Heroes Have Changed Over The YearsBlizzard took to Twitter to celebrateOverwatch 2: Sojourn’s hardcover release, sharing a link to its Amazon page for any players keen to order the book and learn more about Sojourn. The book covers the aforementioned omnic invasion of Canada where Sojourn’s special forces team first crossed paths with the eclectic Overwatch team sent to help halt the omnics' push. Series' mainstays Soldier: 76 and Torbjorn also play major roles in the novel along with Dr. Mina Liao, a brilliantOverwatchscientist responsible for the creation of the game’srobot hero Echo.
Players could argue it isn’t surprising Sojourn is the focus of her own novel given how Blizzard put her front-and-center in its marketing afterOverwatch 2was announced in 2019. She was the first of the sequel’s new heroes to be shown off, withJunker Queenand Kiriko not being announced until 2022. It also speaks to how the studio is trying to capitalize on players' current interest in the game given the novel released roughly a month after the game.
As for potential future novels, there is no shortage of material within theOverwatchuniverse for Blizzard to pull from between the game’s various heroes and events only hinted or slightly glimpsed in comics, cinematics, or in-game. A few examples include the exploits ofDoomfist and the terrorist organization Talon, key battles during the omnic crisis, or the downfall of the original Overwatch years before the games. Regardless of what Blizzard decides to explore, players will be sure to get a deeper look into the massive universe the studio has cultivated to stand alongsideWarcraft,StarCraft, andDiablo.
Overwatch 2is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
