MultiVersusis a week into its first proper Season, and for the most part, things seem to be going well. Fans have been loving the addition ofMorty Smith, the latest fighter to make his way to the game’s roster. With Rick on the way, as well as two surprise fighters in Black Adam and Stripe, there are plenty of characters to look forward to in the inaugural Season. This is in addition to new features like a Ranked Mode, something that fans have been wanting since they first got to try out the game.
While there is plenty to love aboutMultiVersus, one aspect of the game that has proven controversial is its microtransactions. Many feel that the cosmetics on offer are far too pricey, even if a lot of effort has gone into the creation of certain skins and items. As such, some hoped that the first battle pass forMultiVersuswould provide some Gleamium, the paid in-game currency, to help cushion the blow of these costly customization options. Unfortunately, no Gleamium is offered in the first battle pass, one of a few major issues with the current system.

MultiVersus’ Battle Pass Problems
When looking at the many other successful battle passes within the video game industry, a common trend is that players can acquire some paid currency just by progressing through each pass. While an astronomical amount is never given out, gamers usually make enoughV-Bucks, COD Points, or other currency types to buy the next pass. In theory, players can purchase one battle pass, gather up the currency, and get their next one for free, doing this for the entirety of a live service game’s life cycle. This is not the case withMultiVersus, and that should change.
Beyond adding Gleamium to the battle pass’s premium tiers, more should be done with the free version of theMultiVersusbattle pass. Currently, there are several free tiers that are entirely empty, with players only getting a proper reward in the premium slot. This is frustrating for those that play regularly but do not want to spend extra money, as they will likely feel a lot less motivated to engage with the battle pass.
A good solution to this problem would see developerPlayer First Gamesadding toast to the free portion of the battle pass. Used to congratulate players after good games, and get a small XP boost, the toast system is a strong feature, but currently players only get toast by buying it with coins or progressing through the premium pass. Seeing how quickly toast can be used up, and how easily it can be acquired with coins, it would make a fitting reward for the empty slots on the free battle pass. If these spots were filled with toast, the areas of the paid battle pass that currently feature toast could instead offer Gleamium - killing two birds with one stone.
Another issue that severalMultiVersusfans have pointed out is that there are no new Legendary skins in Season 1’s battle pass. This is a shame, as the preseason pass managed to include a standout Legendary skin for Jake. With this outfit, players get to become Cake the cat, the gender-bent version of theAdventure Timecharacter. With an entirely fresh batch of voice lines, the skin is easily one of the best in the game, and many were hoping for a similar skin that provides new dialogue. Sadly, no Legendary skins are on offer in the new battle pass.
Though Legendary skins should be rare and likely take some extra effort to make since they can require new dialogue and actors, getting one per season would be ideal. A Legendary skin is a perfect reward to cap off a battle pass, and after seeing this in the preseason pass with Cake, it is a bummer that the approach has not continued to Season 1. Going forward, Player First games should keep the feedback fromtheMultiVersuscommunityin mind, delivering a battle pass that includes a Legendary skin, more toast in the free tiers, and Gleamium.
