Mortal Kombatis about to premiere to audiences around the world, but clearly, that’s only going to be the opening act for this reboot series. Just like the games themselves, this latest interpretation of the ultraviolent fighting tournament between the realms is hoping to continue releasing new entries for a long, long time. Though no further projects have been announced, one actor has let slip that his contract includes information about just how many films they want to make.
ThefirstMortal Kombatfilmin this reboot saga features a good handful of characters from the games, but with a few notable exceptions. One of the more obvious missing faces is Johnny Cage, the superstar actor who joins the fighting tournament to prove he’s more than just a pretty face. As one of the more comedic characters in the franchise, many fans were disappointed to know that Cage wouldn’t be appearing in this first outing.

Those fans won’t have to be upset for long, however, as it’s been stated many times thatCage was being held backfor potentialMortal Kombatsequels that would feature him heavily. While those sequels have yet to be officially confirmed, according to the actor for Sub-Zero, Joe Taslim, more films are definitely on the horizon. Even though the film is about to make its way to audiences for the first time, Taslim has revealed to Variety that his contract already has him committed to 4 more films, so long as Warner Bros. decides to make them.
To be fair, that doesn’t guarantee thatMortal Kombatsequels will be made, only that the actor has already been asked to stick around if they do, but it’s a good sign that Warner Bros. is interested in continuing on with the property, so long as it does well. Giventhe earlyMortal Kombatreviewsand the strong IP backing it, there’s a lot of reasons to be hopeful for more films in this particular continuity.
Those who want to see more projects in this particular franchise will want to go out and support the film either in theaters or on HBO Max. While the box office is still somewhat unpredictable due to the pandemic, good viewership numbers on streaming will certainly make a case that fans are interested in the reboot. Hopefully, when the film drops it will have been worth the wait and can capturethe spirit of theMortal Kombatgamesthemselves.
