Magic: The Gatheringhas already entered the world ofPC (and soon Mac) gaming withMagic Arena, but now the iconic card game is taking yet another form and allowing gamers to take control of planeswalkers in an action RPG with MMO elements.Magic Legendsis currently in closed testing and is aiming for a 2021 release on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. When the Cryptic Studios title arrives, players will be able to take control of their own planeswalker and work through the game solo or with a small group of friends.

The multiplayer feature ofMagic Legendsis a big selling point for a lot of gamers and the co-op system will allow up to three players to team up and unleash their powers together. Theonline co-op is an exciting inclusionand should help the game foster an active community and allow players to think through tough boss fight strategies together and make sure everyone’s individual spell libraries complement each other’s to form a powerful cohesive party.

During a recent interview withMagic LegendsExecutive Producer Stephen Ricossa Game Rant had the chance to chat more about how multiplayer will work in the ARPG. In addition to discussinghow different healing spells can assist allies inMagic Legends, we also discussed when the game would feature any form of couch co-op to allow gamers to play together from the same console. Unfortunately, Ricossa was able to confirm that at this point there are no plans for local co-op inMagic Legends…

Game Rant: Is there a couch co-op option or only online multiplayer?

Stephen Ricossa: All online multiplayer.

Game Rant: Any plans for cross-platform multiplayer?

Stephen Ricossa: Currently not, though it’s not completely off the table.

Although couch co-op is a nice feature to have, it’s obviously not a make or break selling point for many gamers at this point.Magic Legendsis also a free-to-play game, which means it should be very easy to convince some friends who are playing games on the same platform to download it and give it a try when the title launches. If the game does catch on and grow in popularity in the coming year, it will be interesting to see if Cryptic Studios reconsiders local co-op and considers patching it in at some point. For now, gamers will have to stick to online at launch though.

There is only one remaining launch class left to reveal, so hopefully the team at Cryptic is ready to offer a look at what the Black-mana planeswalker class has to offer in the very near future. Until then, be sure to check back for moreMagic Legendsnews, updates, and features.
