All in all, people are happy thatHorizon Zero Dawn, one of the PS4’s most critically-acclaimed games, is now available on Steam, judging byhow massively popular its PC debut is, but by now it’s clear that the transition from one platform to the other has turned out less than smoothly. This is apparent in the fact that the game seems to have a hard time not crashing on players.

Since Guerrilla Games’ open-world action-adventure title hit Steam yesterday, players have been reporting a wide assortment of problems, with things ranging from character model and texture bugs to glitches andlag causing issues forHorizonon PC. Worst of all, though, are the crashes. Numerous posts on Reddit and Steam have complained about how frequently the game crashes during cut-scenes and gameplay, to the point that many players have struggled to even start up the game without it bugging out.

With how prevalent the problem seems to be, players have been eager to find whatever solutions they can. Nothing so far has proven guaranteed to fix the issue across the board, but players have come up with a few suggestions. First, it’s been recommended that players ensure that their drivers are fully updated, and as for the game itself, players have found some success adjusting their graphical settings and disabling their Steam overlays to reduce the strain on the game.

Whether these will really help much in the long run remains to be seen, because the problem evidently goes much deeper than that. Programmers have dug into the game’s files, and their findings suggest that the PC version ofHorizon: Zero Dawnsuffers from somewhat shoddy coding, with one particularly damning find being a piece of code that tries to access a file that doesn’t actually exist, which is guaranteed to crash the game.

In the wake of all this, and thereview-bombingHorizon’s PC port has receivedas a result, Guerrilla took the opportunity to reach out to players. In an update regarding the complaints, theHorizonsubreddit’s community manager wrote that the studio is investigating the issues and will provide updates once available. “We have been monitoring all of our channels and are aware that some players have been experiencing crashes and other technical issues,” they said. “Please know that we are investigating your reports as our highest priority.”

What’s been especially frustrating about this whole situation is that, according to players who haven’t been dealing with bugs and crashes,Horizon: Zero Dawnis just as great on PCas it is on PS4, if not more so. Everyone should be able to enjoy it like that, and with any luck, it won’t take long for Guerrilla to release optimization patches that will make these frequent crashes a thing of the past.
