It’s no secret thatThe Witcherstar Henry Cavill is a hardcore gamer. In fact, there’s a famous story about howCavill missed his callback to play Superman inMan of Steelbecause he was busy playingWorld of Warcraft. As it turns out, Cavill plays other Blizzard games as well, recently revealing at aWitcherpress event who his main character is.
At an event promotingThe WitcherNetflix series, Cavill was asked who he mains inOverwatch. Apparently, Cavill mains Symmetra, the former support hero who was reworked into a DPS character after a number of changes from Blizzard. Cavill explained that he started playingOverwatchshortly afterPaladins(it’s possible that the game Cavill was referring to was actuallyBattlebornand was misidentified by the person asking the question), so he played as Symmetra during the game’s early days. Cavill said that he got back intoOverwatchjust this past year, and he has continued to play as Symmetra, despite his belief that “everyone hates her.”

Prior to the Symmetra reworks, she certainly was one of the most controversial characters in the game, up there with the likes of Torbjorn. However, theSymmetra reworkshave done wonders for her character’s viability, making her much more useful than she ever was when the game first came out.
The Symmetra reworks inOverwatchwere necessary because Blizzard needed to make her a more popular character. Prior to the reworks, Symmetra was the least-used character on the entireOverwatchroster, and for good reason. As Cavill points out in the video, the original version of Symmetra had a reputation of being difficult to play effectively, and so many players opted to choose easier heroes instead.
Blizzard hasn’t had to change any of theOverwatchcharacters nearly as much as it did Symmetra, but it’s possible new characters will run into similar problems in the future. For example, Blizzard may need to change thenewOverwatch 2hero Sojournonce she’s added to the game, or maybe it will need to rework some characters that are already on the roster. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if Symmetra enjoys a spike in popularity once it becomes known that she’s the main character choice for Henry Cavill.
