DeMarle most recently won the 2022 Game Award for Best Narrative forMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxywhile she worked as an Executive Narrative Director at Eidos-Montreal. Before her work onMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, DeMarle was also a Narrative Director, Lead Writer, and Narrative Designer onDeus Ex: Human Revolution.
It was announced recently thatDeMarle was added to BioWare’s ranksand this role reveal should mean a lot to fans since her achievements and career are exceptional. It will be interesting to see what she is able to bring to the newMass Effectgame in the role of a Senior Narrative Director. Her work onMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxyis a particularly intriguing achievement and could translate well toMass Effectsince the former had already begged comparison to the latter.
Many playersassociated the Guardians’ camaraderie and space exploration withMass Effect’s story beats. Meanwhile, others perceived similar combat maneuvers with how fans control a sole protagonist who is then able to command other squad members who demonstrate unique abilities.Mass Effectis known for its liberal expression of player choice in dialogue, even if its Paragon and Renegade choices are decidedly binary. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxylacks choices that weigh this significantly on players, and its choices rarely lead to an event or situation that the player’s alternative option would have led to anyway. Regardless of this, DeMarle’s work onMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxymay have won her the role as Senior Narrative Director due to her accolades and how the game’s narrative was received, especially with how adaptable some of its beats may be toa band of NPC companions who dabble in interstellar travel.
