Gran Turismo 7came out earlier this month to rave reviews. Many critics consider it a return to form for the franchise, andGran Turismo 7is currently the highest-rated game in the series since 2005’sGran Turismo 4on PS2.

However,Gran Turismo 7’slaunch was far from perfect, as users couldn’t play the game for hours due to server maintenance. Players need to be connected online to playGT7’s singleplayer campaign, and developer Polyphony Digital had extended the maintenance period due to an issue found with update 1.07.Gran Turismo 7is also receiving criticism for its microtransactions, and the credits earned for winning races got reduced in a recent patch, which further angered the player base. Now, players are showing their frustrations by posting negative reviews for the game.

Gran Turismo 7has a user score of 2.4 on Metacritic, a massive difference from its critic score of 87. Most users state that they like the gameplay ofGran Turismo 7but are posting negative reviews due to the always-online campaign and the microtransactions. In addition,GT7’s cars are more expensivethan they are in its predecessor, as it can take $30+ to purchase a car that costs $3 inGT Sport.

Sony’s PS5 games cost $70 compared to $60 charged by most other publishers, and many users raised concerns over this increase when the console launched. However, PlayStation titles continue to sell well, and games likeHorizon Forbidden Westand last year’sRatchet & Clank: Rift Apartdid not contain microtransactions. Still, a new report from the VSC Rating Board suggests thatHorizon Forbidden Westwill get an online storefor DLC expansions, and the game’s ESRB rating also mentions in-game purchases. As such, it does seem like Sony is finally looking to add microtransactions to its singleplayer catalog.

Hitman 3,Dying Light 2,Lost Ark, andElden Ringalso got review bombedthis year, but the extent varies between titles.Gran Turismo 7’s user score is lower than all of these games, and it’s incredibly disappointing because gamers seem to like the core gameplay. Polyphony Digital will have to address these concerns in an update, but perhaps it’s too late to make the campaign playable offline. However, players may be satisfied if the developer changes the rate of earning credits and the amount required to purchase desirable cars - though it remains to be seen if either adjustment will actually end up being made by Polyphony.

Gran Turismo 7is available now on PS4 and PS5.
