Summary
It’s been nearly five years since The Coalition released the last mainlineGears of Wargame, withGears 5in September 2019. Fans have long desired to see what The Coalition would do for theGearsfranchise with the power of the Xbox Series X. Players finally had their questions answered at the 2024 Xbox Showcase with the announcement of the next mainlineGearsgame in the form of the prequelGears of War: E-Day.
However, new rumors and job listings have hinted at more than just the Locust breaking new ground with E-Day’s upcoming release. These new details may hint at a possible PlayStation 5 release forGears of War: E-Day, a first for the series.

Recent Xbox Exclusive Ports and Rumors for PS5
Ever since Microsoft announced in February 2024 that four previously Xbox-exclusive titles would be released on PS5 and the Nintendo Switch, players have become both worried and excited about the potential of being able to play some of Xbox’s greatest hits on other consoles. In this first wave of ports,2023’sHi-Fi Rushand 2018’sSea of Thieveswere announced to come to the PS5, while 2022’sPentimentand 2020’sGroundedwould come to both the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty claimed the decision to bring these exclusives to other consoles was to grow their communities and bring players together.
Following these releases, more rumors of other celebratedXbox exclusives coming to the PS5have appeared, such as aHalo: Combat Evolvedremake and nowGears of War: E-Day. In regard toE-Day, this rumor began with a June Microsoft Careers job listing at The Coalition for a Senior Online Client Engineer. Among the job’s qualifications are a bachelor’s degree in computer science, over two years working with matchmaking systems, and a preferred qualification of “Experience with Xbox Live, PSN, Steam, or other online gaming platforms.” No other Coalition job listing mentions PSN specifically, instead looking for experience with Xbox Live or other online gaming platforms.
Gears of Warhas never been released on PlayStation consoles before, butGears 5andGears Tacticscan be played on Steam, withGears of War: E-Daylisted as coming soon on the PC storefront.
Gears of War: E-Day’s Potential on PS5
While the mere mention of looking for someone with experience on PSN doesn’t necessarily confirm a PlayStationGears of Warrelease, there is a lot of potential for the franchise to come to Sony consoles. From a business standpoint, it could help boostE-Day’s sales, especially if many players abandoned the series after its five-year-long absence. WithE-Daybeing a prequel set atthe beginning of the Locust War, it could prove to be the perfect jumping-on point for new fans on the Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam to delve into the war-torn world of Sera. Depending on whenE-Dayis released, it could further serve as a test to see how Xbox’s most prolific franchises perform on other consoles.
In terms of multiplayer,Gears of War: E-Dayon the PS5 could bring one of the most popular PVP and PVE multiplayer systems to Sony players. If crossplay is enabled between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, a PS5 release could makeE-Dayone ofGears of War’s most populated gamesin the entire series. HavingE-Day’s multiplayer on the PS5 could further revitalize Gears Esports with potential new athletes from Sony consoles, as well as potentially increase fan viewership.
Gears of War’s PlayStation Potential Beyond E-Day
Gears of War: E-Dayon the PlayStation 5 may help boostE-Daysales, but it could help bring other pastGears of Wargames to the Sony console. For several years now, rumors ofThe Coalition developing aMarcus Fenix Collectionof presumably all prior mainlineGears of Wargames have appeared similar toHalo: The Master Chief Collection. If this rumored compilation turns out to be true and comes out afterGears of War: E-Dayon PS5, it could help allow PlayStation players to easily experience the rest of Marcus Fenix’s story without having to buy an Xbox or PC.
