Pokemon Day 2016 set a high bar that the following two years weren’t really able to match. While The Pokemon Company still found clever ways to celebrate thePokemonfranchise in 2017 and 2018, those particular Pokemon Day events didn’t feature any big announcements for the franchise. However, things ramped up in 2019 with a Nintendo Direct event that sawPokemon Sword and Shieldrevealed for the Nintendo Switch- the Generation 8Pokemongames and the first brand-new, mainline releases for Nintendo’s home console/handheld hybrid.

2020 was more low-key for its Pokemon Day celebrations, with events hosted in games likePokemon GO,Pokemon Masters, andPokemon Sword and Shield. The day was light on major announcements beyond thereveal of Mythical Pokemon ZarudeforPokemon Sword and Shield. With rumblings of a new Mythical Pokemon potentially coming toPokemon Scarlet and Violet, it’s possible Pokemon Day 2024 will take a page out of the 2020 event’s playbook.
2021 marked the 25th anniversary of thePokemonfranchise, and it also played host to one of the most exciting Pokemon Days to date. On that day,Pokemonfans were treated to news on existing and upcomingPokemongames, likeNew Pokemon Snap, along with the reveal of Generation 4 remakesPokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearland the announcement ofPokemon Legends: Arceus.Pokemon Legends: Arceustook the franchise in bold new directions, experimenting with a more open-ended game design that saw it become one of the highest-rated newPokemongames in years.
