Summary
A player inFallout 4has discovered a way to parry enemies while unarmed, but it’s not without drawbacks. WhileFallout 4’s unarmed attacks focus on punching and blocking, parrying is somewhat of an unexplored mechanic.
Allthe powerful weaponry inFallout 4provides a wide variety of arms to suit most play-styles, from traditional lead bullets, to lasers, to cannonballs, to the cataclysmic Mini Nuke. These weapons are all customizable as well, provided a Sole Survivor has the right materials and the right perks selected. For those who want to go the Unarmed route, however, there have been complaints that there’s not as much variety to offer in the way of fist-based weaponry. But as Reddit user Agent_Gentleman discovered in a fight against an Epic Behemoth, sometimes where there is a will, there’s also a way.

During Agent_Gentleman’s fight, they were able to successfully parrythe devastating attacks of an Epic Behemothseveral times in a row. Using only the Boxing Glove weapon, which consists of a single boxing glove, and striking at the right time, the Behemoth’s attacks were effectively canceled with every hit, slowly whittling down the powerful endgame enemy’s health.
This was how Agent_Gentleman learned that not only can Epic Behemoths chain attacks several times in a row, they’re not a fan of when that happens. While it ispossible to simply avoid Behemoths, this seemingly-frustrated Epic Behemoth then uses a stomp attack at point-blank range which effectively ends Agent_Gentleman’s boxing career before it starts.
Fallout 4’s Unpopular Unarmed Combat
Despite the novelty of the interaction, it’s been possible to parry while unarmed inFallout 4since roughly the game’s release, and some players may have even parried enemies inFallout: New Vegas. Roaming the wasteland without a weapon simply isn’t a popular or seemingly effective way to get through the game, and most aspiring brawlers end up using one of the multitudes of melee weaponsFallouthas to offer, sometimes eventhe craziest melee weapons inFallout. Furthermore,Falloutveterans describe the parrying mechanic as unbalanced in enemies' favor, as can be seen in the footage when the Behemoth immediately recovers from each hit. When it comes to a fistfight, most players find it easier to target the enemy using VATS instead of relying on their own reflexes.
Obviously the Unarmed route isn’t impossible. Players have developedguides to making over-powered characters inFallout 4before, and making a viable Unarmed build to take on the wasteland is a matter of strategy and preparation. But now that more players are realizing they can foil an enemy’s offensive with perfect timing and a decent amount of luck, it’s possible that more Unarmed guides toFallout 4will start cropping up.
