Summary
Solo Levelingis one of the most popular manhwa of all time, if not just straight-up the most famous. Created by Chugong andthe late Sung-rak Jang,it first debuted in 2018 on Tapas and Pocket Comics in the US.Solo Levelingor “Only I Level Up” obtained worldwide renown nearly overnight for its stunning visuals and action-packed story. The story is set in a world where portals to an alternate dimension filled with monsters open up randomly across the land, and powerful individuals called “Hunters” enter those portals to protect the populace and obtain fame and glory.
The main character, Sung Jin-woo, starts as a low-level Hunter with no potential and quickly becomes the most powerful Hunter in his country due to a mysterious second awakening. However, the world ofSolo Levelingis vast, filled with power Hunters of various classes that even control their own guilds.Solo Leveling’s success earned an anime adaptation, which produced a good first season and an even better sequel. While Sung is unquestionably the protagonist, he is not the onlySolo Levelinghunterwho gets to shine throughout the manhwa and anime. Sung Jin-woo
The Shadow Monarch
Sung Jin-woois the main character ofSolo Levelingand one of the most powerful hunters in the series due to his second awakening. He started as a weak tag-along who could barely make it through the lowest-level dungeons and would usually be relegated to collecting loot and carrying equipment.
After a tragic encounter and being abandoned by his party, Sung Jin-woo obtained a mysterious power that ushered him back into the world as one of the strongest Hunters. Sung is known as the Shadow Monarch due tohis control of his dark summons, which bears a striking resemblance to enemies he defeated in the past. In season 2 of the anime, Sung’s rank is rechecked, promoting him from an E-Rank to an S-Rank.
Cha Hae-In
The Dancer And Respected Swordswoman
Cha Haeis a well-known hunter inSolo Leveling’s world and is highly respected among her peers, in addition to having a solid fan group. She serves as the second-in-command of the Hunter’s Guild,alongside Choi Jong-In, and has the skills to stand apart as a leader in the guild.
Cha Hae is a somewhat reserved and distant individual who comes off as off-putting due to her unique sense of smell. Additionally, Cha Hae is an expert swordswoman with blinding speed, able to cut down hordes of monsters in an instant. She specializes in attack skills, such as Sword of Light and Sword Dancer. She takes a special interest in Sung as he does not smell like other hunters.
Baek Yoonho
The Ravenous Beast And Powerful Guild Master
Baek Yoonhois one of thestrongest Hunters in Koreaand leads his own guild, which is filled with dedicated members who are utterly loyal to him for his leadership and commitment to his guild members, whom he considers family. He has a rough outer exterior and is not seen as approachable, but he is a noble individual with a sense of honor.
Baek Yoonho specializes in transformation magic and channels the animal traits of his beast form, which come through in his personality quite often. When transforming completely, Baek dawns the appearance of a majestic king of beasts.
Yoo Jin-Ho
Sung Jin-woo’s Best Friend
Yoo Jin-Hois a low-level Hunter that Sung Jin-woo saved during a dungeon run. After that point, they become good friends, with Yoo effectively acting as Sung’s right-hand man when it comes to planning raids. When Sung Jinwoo refused to join one of the more notable guilds in Korea, and instead decided to form a guild with someone he could trust, he chose Yoo Jinhoo.
Yoo is a kind and trustworthy young man who is deathly loyal to Sung but can be somewhat quirky to most people. As a Tanker, he specializes in defensive skills, although his ceiling is too low to take part in hard raids. Even though he is very low-level,Yoo still has adequate abilities, and Sung just handles all the conflicts.
Choi Jong-In
The Ultimate Soldier And Powerful Guild Master
Choi Jong-Inis one of the most prominent Hunters in Korea, widely respected as one of the most brilliant tactical minds of all hunters and theguild master of the Hunter’s Guild. Choi Jong-In has a supremely confident persona that comes off as having a superiority complex, but he is quite kind.
Choi Jong-In is a powerful Mage with the most destructive control over fire magic in the world of Hunters; his prowess on the battlefield and unparalleled destructive abilities have earned him the moniker “The Ultimate Soldier”.
Go Gunhee
The Sky Above The Skies
In the Hunter’s world ofSolo Leveling,few names carry as much respect asGo Gunhee. A veteran hunter of over sixty-plus years, he stood at the apex of power not only in Korea but also all over the world. Even over the age of eighty, Go Gunhee carries a level of strength and confidence that even gave Sung Jin-woo pause.
However, with all his power, Go Gunhee carries himself as a very approachable individual, despite being in charge of the entire Hunter’s association in Korea. He shows respect to most other hunters, while demanding the same. He takes a special interest in Sung, hoping to convince him to join the Korean Hunters Association.
Woo Jinchul
Chief Inspector Of The Hunters Guild
Woo Jinchulis second in command to Go Gunhee and is the liaison between the Hunter’s Association and the elite S-Rank hunters under their care. Woo Jinchul is in charge of contacting prominent, powerful hunters who have recently gained strength or gone through a second awakening.
Woo Jinchul carries himself very conservatively and has an intense persona that echoes his abilities as a Hunter. Very rarely does Woo Jinchul exert himself, but he is classified as being just below S-Rank. As a Fighter class hunter, Woo possesses immense strength and speed.
Lee Joo-Hee
Former B-Rank Healer
Lee Joo-Heemade her appearance in the first episode of theSolo Levelinganime as the kindhearted and timid healer of Sung Jin-woo’s group who entered the double dungeon as the dedicated healer. She is one of the few who barely made it out of the dungeon with her life and suffered from detrimental side effects such as panic attacks and PTSD.
It crippled Lee thinking about how she abandoned Sung Jin-woo, and she could barely step forward into a dungeon without breaking into a sweat due to guilt and fear. She eventually overcomes her stress condition and her guilt by reconciling with Sung and moving on, retiring from being a hunter.
Song Chi-Yul
Old Man Song
Song Chi-Yulwas another original member of the party who entered the double dungeon and one of the only four who survived. Sung Chi-Yul was an accomplished Hunter, although low-ranking, who saw himself as a mentor to up-and-coming rankers like Sung.
After losing his arm, Song Chi-Yul lost his arm in the dungeon and tried to retire, but was brought back into hunting after falling on hard times. Being a talented mage, Song Chi-Yul was also a talented physical combatant, thanks to his everyday life activities. Upon reuniting with Sung Jinwoo, he could finally put his past behind him, seeing how much the young man had grown up.
