This past week, Epic Games unveiled Unreal Engine 5 with the stunningLumen in the Land of Nanitetech demo, itself running on Sony’s PlayStation 5 console. The presentation was one of the most impressive displays of next-generation technology to date, but fans noticed that the demo made no mention of Microsoft’s next-generation console, the Xbox Series X. And as it so happens, neither Microsoft nor Epic will outright confirm if theLumen in the Land of Nanitedemo can run onXbox Series X.

Kotaku received an email from Epic Games explaining thatUnreal Engine 5and its various next-generation features will also be possible on Xbox Series X, but wouldn’t confirm if the specific demo shown could run on Microsoft’s new console. “We aren’t running it on XBSX,” is what Epic said. Microsoft also wouldn’t say whether or not the demo could run on Xbox Series X, but rather stressed that there are many Xbox Series X games being built with Unreal Engine, and that “The fidelity seen in the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo is something that people can expect for next gen gaming across devices.”

The PS5 and Xbox Series X have similar specs, and in many regards, Xbox Series X specs outmatch PS5. However, there is one key advantage that the PS5 has, and that is its SSD. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has even gone as far as to say that thePS5 SSD is better than high-end PCs, and it’s possible that the PS5 SSD is what enables it to run this specific tech demo. As pointed out by Kotaku, it’s possible that theLumen in the Land of Nanitedemo hasn’t been shown on Xbox Series X because the new console can’t run it at the same quality as PS5, or it’s possible that Epic simply decided to partner with Sony to showcase Unreal Engine 5 at this time.

For what it’s worth,Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberghas commented on the Unreal Engine 5 PS5 tech demo, calling it “super impressive,” but implying that the engine will produce even more impressive content when running on Xbox Series X, “the world’s most powerful console.”

As is the case with most console generations, fans can expect games onPS5and Xbox Series X to look and run similarly, with minor differences. The power gap between the two consoles isn’t likely to be all that significant, and both consoles will feature games running Unreal Engine 5.
