A curiousElden Ringplayer wondered why a certain Transporter Trap exists, prompting a discussion as to what lore or gameplay reason may justify it. Leyndell acts as a prelude toElden Ring’s endgame difficulty spike, begging the question of why Tarnished can visit the Royal Capital within hours of starting.

Transporter Traps are one of the most memorable aspects ofElden Ring, particularly during the opening hours of a playthrough. It is likely that before coming across these decoys, players will be accustomed to teleporting either by Waygates or fast travel.AlthoughElden Ringfeatures a distinct lack of Mimics, the enemies that disguise themselves as potential treasure throughout theDark Soulsseries, the Lands Between features its own deceitful chests to be wary of. FromSoftware must have known that players would enthusiastically open the chest that Patches explicitly orders Tarnished not to, or that the temptation to raid the Dragon-Burnt ruins after defeating Flying Dragon Agheel would be too great to ignore.

An image posted to Reddit by Various-Pll-5591 shows a Tarnished “ensnared in a transporter trap,” which teleports them to Leyndell, Royal Capital. Captioned “what is the point of this (shortcut?!),” others were invited to speculate as to what purpose, if any, this particular Transporter Trap served. For context, the teleporting mist that whisks Tarnished to a region much later into the game is found at the Tower of Return,a ruined location south of the Weeping Peninsula’s western side.

The Peninsula is accessible after a few minutes of starting anElden Ringjourney, it merely requires players to travel there, whereas Leyndell requires two Shardbearers to be defeated before Tarnished are accepted within the castle walls. However, the Tower of Return’s Transporter Trap moves players into an isolated area of Leyndell, which offers a glimpse of the Royal Capital, the corpse of a dragon that lays strewn across it, and what is in store for players as they proceed. Comments noted that outside of the spectacle, which is a perfectly legitimate reason for existing, players may not ever discover the utility of this Transporter Trap.

There is a sleeping Golem further along the platform, seemingly guarding a Waygate that remains inactive until much later into the game. It allows players to access the Isolated Divine Tower, which can then be ascended in order to restore Malenia’s Great Rune. However, after defeating Maliketh, the Black Blade, Leyndell becomes the Ashen Capital and the traditional route towards this location becomes inaccessible. Given thatMalenia is a fight many would understandably leaveuntil nearElden Ring’s conclusion, the ability to activate her Great Rune would be stripped from players if not for the Transporter Trap at the Tower of Return’s apex.

Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
