2022 marks the 30th anniversary of theMortal Kombatfighting game franchise, and NetherRealm has been celebrating by releasing behind-the-scenes videos of the games.Mortal Kombatcreator Ed Boon recently took to Twitter to share a behind-the-scenes video of the crew filmingfan favorite character Raiden, and it prompted some reactions from fans.
As spotted by ComicBook, one fan responded to the video asking Boon if fans should expect “something big soon” since 2022 isMortal Kombat’s 30th anniversary, and it’s not uncommon for game companies to use anniversaries to make big announcements. Unfortunately for anyone hoping thatMortal Kombat’s 30th anniversary would mean that a big announcement or reveal is happening soon, it doesn’t seem like that will be the case.

Boon responded to the fan by saying, “Soon? No.” This suggests that while NetherRealm does have something in the works, perhaps even somethingMortal Kombatrelated, fans won’t be seeing it at any point in the near future. While this is disappointing news, it may also be expected consideringMortal Kombat 11is only a few years oldat this point and received continuous updates in the years after its initial launch.
Something else that may be playing a factor into why NetherRealm is not quite ready to show off its next project is the studio’s uncertain future. Reports indicate thatWarner Bros. is looking to sell its game studios, and NetherRealm would be part of that equation. It’s possible that this is impacting NetherRealm’s next project. After all, NetherRealm may have wanted to makeInjustice 3next, but perhaps is holding off to see if it will even be remaining in the WB family or not.
Injustice 3is one possibility for NetherRealm’s next game, but rumors have suggested that the studio is instead working onMortal Kombat 12. Other rumors still are even more ambitious, claiming thatNetherRealm’s next game is a Marvel fighting game project. Whatever NetherRealm is working on, fans of the studio’s work will have to wait to learn more about it. And at this point, there’s no telling how long the wait might be.
Boon has been known to troll fans on Twitter, but even so, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a big NetherRealm reveal to happen anytime soon. Warner Bros. has no game reveal events announced for the near future, and its future in the gaming industry is uncertain. It will be interesting to see what happens, but it might take some time for fans to learn more about what’s next for NetherRealm.
