The gaming community has always considered game franchises likeResident EvilandThe Evil Withinto be theperfect examples of survival horror games. But, the world of survival horror games has continued to evolve into new and unusual themes beyond the common trope of post-apocalyptic survival. One indie game developer that has created a distinctive theme in the survival genre is the Dread Hunger Team, which developedDread Hunger.

InDread Hunger, players must survive and complete a deadly voyage alongside eight other players. But, aside from managing Hunger and other survival stats, players must avoid being killed by the Thrall, a disguised player-controlled character whose primary goal is to eliminate the other players and survive the voyage. Fortunately, players can access several weapons to aid them in their journey, but only some of them will be effective in fending off the Thrall.

9Spyglass

As players can expect, the Spyglass is the worst weapon inDread Hungerto use against Thralls, players, and other deadly monstrosities like the Cannibals (unique Thrall power). The Spyglass has a hit speed of .9 seconds and does 10 Damage when swung or 30 if thrown. Of course, players should avoid throwing the Spyglass unless there’s no other option.

But, players who opt for this peculiar weapon will be happy to know that it also has a set of abilities. By interacting with it, players will see through the Spyglass and can check a player’s current Health (Healthy - Full HP,Injured - Above 50 HP, andBadly Injured - Below 50 HP).

8Meat Cleaver

Even though the Meat Cleaver may seem like a powerful weapon to use inDread Hunger, it isn’t, as it has the same damage values as the Spyglass. The only significant difference between the previous weapon and the Meat Cleaver is that its hit speed is .7, a bit faster than the Spyglass.

But, just like the Spyglass, the Meat Cleaver has a somewhat cynical secondary use which may come in handy when the going gets rough. And that’s because it’s the perfect tool to chop off body parts for food during the long voyage. As hardcore fans know, there may be a point when players have no access to food, so they’ll need to do the unthinkable.

7Shovel

The Shovel is a decent weapon inDread Hungersince players can also use it to dig up specific “dig spots” that contain precious items and weapons. It has a 1.1 hit speed but deals 15 Damage, meaning it’ll make quick work of any Cannibal.

In terms of usability, the Shovel can dig up Strong Boxes that contain materials for crafting and Captain Corpses which can yield Bone Clubs, Coal, Laudanum, Bone Charms, Flintlock Pistol, or a Sabre. If players want to increase their chances of acquiring valuable items, they’ll need touse the Chaplain Classas it increases trinket loot chance.

6Ice Axe

Despite having lower damage output than the previous entry, the Ice Axe can be thrown, which makes it more effective at taking out Cannibal, Thralls, or players. On top of that, players can use the Ice Axe to climb blue ice walls, which usually lead to precious loot.

Climbing walls are also helpful in escaping certain dangers like Cannibals or Polar Bears, both of which can end a player’s life in an instant. No class starts with Ice Axe, so players should keep their eyes peeled for Strong Boxes as they may contain one.

5Wood Axe

The Wood Axe is the starting weapon for the Engineer Class and is the second strongest melee weapon inDread Hunger. It has a base swing damage of 16 and a hit speed of 1.1. Players can also use the Wood Axe to chop down wood to place into the ship’s furnace.

Additionally, players can use the Sticks they obtain by chopping wood to create Barrels and thencraft a Powder Keg. But, using a Powder Keg is quite dangerous, so survival fans should avoid lighting it up on the ship.

4Sabre

Undoubtedly, the Sabre is the strongest melee weapon inDread Hungeras it can deal 18 Damage (plus 30 when thrown). It also has the ability to chop off limbs and heads, which can be useful while fighting a Thrall. But, with all this great power comes durability, meaning this weapon can break.

Players can repair the Sabre while it still has durability, but once broken, it cannot be repaired and only deals 11 damage per swing. So, players should pick their fights carefully and avoid overusing this weapon until further into the voyage.

3Bow

The latest weapon to be added toDread Hungerwas the Bow, and since then, it has proven to be an effective tool to hunt animals and players if needed. Players need to reload every shot, but as long as the player maintains the aim animation, it’ll reload reasonably fast.

Another reason the Bow merits being ranked high in thisDread Hungertier list is that players can easily craft the ammunition (arrows). But, of course, players should avoid using the Bow to fight off hordes of Cannibals as they may be overwhelmed.

2Flintlock Pistol

In a world with so many melee weapons, guns dominate nearly every aspect of combat. The Flintlock Pistol can one-shot any Cannibal, player, or Thrall (unless they’ve set up various Totems). But it’s best to fire the Flintlock Pistol at close range since the bullets have a medium drop-off, meaning the farther the shot, the less damage it’ll do.

Moreover, the Flintlock Pistol has medium durability and cannot be repaired once broken. Players should also be aware that it has a slight chance of misfiring and harming the player. Nonetheless, this weapon outmatches every previous entry due to its high damage output.

1Musket

Undoubtedly, the Musket is the best weapon inDread Hungeras it has the highest damage output in the game. The Musket is also a long-range weapon, meaning players can “snipe” other players or Cannibals without being seen. After six shots, the Musket will be unusable and must be taken to a workbench to repair.

The biggest downside of using the Musket is finding enough ammunition to keep using it. That’s why players should always loot any Captain Corpse or Strong Box, as they may have ammunition.
