Summary

Dragon’s Dogma 2stays true to the formula of its predecessor in a multitude of ways, including its vocations. Most ofDragon’s Dogma 2’s vocationshave been carried over from the first game, but there are a few new classes that are worth recognition. Among those new classes are the Thief, the Trickster, and the Warfarer, all of which have their merits and can be useful in a variety of situations. However, another new class inDragon’s Dogma 2arguably rises above them all in its versatility and unique gameplay never before experienced in theDragon’s Dogmafranchise — the Mystic Spearhand.

Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Mystic Spearhand vocation has received high praise since the game’s launch, and even in previews leading up to it. While the Warfarer is certainly a standout class due to its ability to utilize the weapons, armor, and skills of every other vocation, the Mystic Spearhand class has proven to be a top choice among players, thanks to its fast-paced hybrid gameplay and its accessibility in comparison to the Warfarer. Much like the first game’s Mystic Knight,Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Mystic Spearhand combines melee and magic for some of the game’s most devastating attacks while remaining highly mobile on the battlefield.

Why the Mystic Spearhand Is a Standout Class in Dragon’s Dogma 2

The Mystic Spearhand Is a Melee/Magic Hybrid

The Mystic Spearhand’s most prominent feature is its ability to combine melee and magic attacks for fluid, fast-paced gameplay. With its unique Duospear weapon and the ability to cast ranged magic at the drop of a hat, theMystic Spearhandis probably the closest anyone will get to being a double-bladed lightsaber-wielding Jedi inDragon’s Dogma 2. The Duospear is long and the Mystic Spearhand’s basic Twein Cut attack is quick, allowing for wide area-of-effect attacks in rapid succession. Its special attack, Magike Cut, uses the might of the Duospear to fling a wave of elemental magic at enemies, which always corresponds to whatever element the weapon is imbued with.

The Mystic Spearhand also comes with some useful defensive and support skills. Most notably, Mirour Vesture creates a temporary protective barrier around the player and party members in the immediate vicinity, and Thef’s Hond saps a target’s vitality to regenerate Stamina. Overall, like the Mystic Knight vocation inDragon’s Dogma, the Mystic Spearhand is well-rounded in its ability to deliver powerful blows, be it melee or magic, and to keep themselves and their Pawns protected and fueled for battle.

The Mystic Spearhand Is Highly Mobile

Where the Mystic Spearhand truly shines is in the use of its ranged magic attack, Redouted Bolt. While the attack deals very little damage on its own, one of the Mystic Spearhand’s core skills, Quik Fot, enables players to essentially teleport to their attacker following the use of the enhanced versions of Redouted Bolt, Forbeding Bolt and Scatering Bolt. In a way, Quik Fot functions very similarly toClive Rosfield’sPhoenix Shift ability inFinal Fantasy 16. This, along with weapon skills like Dragoun’s Foin allows the Mystic Spearhand to dart across the battlefield, thereby increasing its evasion and contributing to its ability to deliver surprise attacks.

While there areten vocations to unlock inDragon’s Dogma 2, none shine quite as brightly as the Mystic Spearhand, and that continues to prove to be the case in its ongoing reception. No other class, aside from perhaps the Warfarer when it is perfected, can blend melee, magic, speed, and force together in the way that the Mystic Spearhand can. Plus, thanks to its mighty unique Duospear weapon, it can unleash attacks that other classes are unable to perform, and in a much more stylish way as a bonus.
