The much-awaited trading card game (TCG)Disney Lorcanaofficially has a release date. First announced in August 2022,Disney Lorcanais a family-friendly card gamefeaturing beloved Walt Disney Animation characters, like Mickey Mouse, Moana, and the Disney Princesses, designed in their original and re-imagined art styles.

According toDisney Lorcana’s publisher Ravensburger, players will take on the role a power sorcerer called Illumineer, who’s tasked to band together characters from “The Great Illuminary,” a collection of all Disney songs and stories. Just like other TCGs,Lorcana’s character cards appear to have power levels and unique mechanics, while Action cards apply effects or do specific actions, like banishing a chosen character. A number of cards have already been unveiled via social media, themost recent one being Olaf fromFrozen, but the first set namedDisney Lorcana: The First Chapteris expected to drop in fall 2023.

IGN has confirmed thatDisney Lorcana: The First Chapterwill officially launch on August 18th in local game stores in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, and France. The first drop will include a total of 200 cards that players can get through starter decks, booster packs, a gift set, and a collectible set called the Illumineer’s Trove. Players can choose from three different starter decks that come with a specific list of 60 cards in two of the six magic inks, as well as one booster pack with 12 randomized cards, including one foil card and two rare cards.

As for the Illumineer’s Trove, players can get eight booster packs with foil and rare cards, two deck boxes, a guidebook, and a themed storage box. For players who want unique cards, the gift set will have four booster packs that will include Hades andMulancards, two foil game cards, game tokens, and two oversized foil cards.

Disney Lorcanaco-designer Ryan Miller told IGN that they made a “robust line of fun and exciting products” forThe First Chapterto cater to beginners who just want a starter set, and serious players who want to experience the full experience with the Illumineer’s Trove. He emphasized that theDisney Lorcanateam is serious about expanding the TCG, and that they’re here to stay. This seems to be a sign thatDisney Lorcanamight have its own competitive scene in the future, which would rival the likes ofMagic: The GatheringandPokemon. It will be interesting to see how players would build their decks, especially once more cards are released, and dictate the meta for the very first Disney TCG.
