ThroughoutDestiny 2’s history, there have been plenty of glitches (and exploits) thatgave weapons and abilities more damagethan intended. Depending on the complexity of the glitch or exploit, it can take Bungie anywhere from days to weeks to months to fix the problem, but usually, the studio gets to the bottom of things quickly. However, a new damage glitch inDestiny 2is stumping both the community and the developers since no one can reliably recreate it.
TheDestiny 2damage glitch seems to stack buffs in such a way that a boss is instantly reduced to 0 HP. Players began noticing the glitch during Season of Arrivals but most brushed it off as a random bug rather than a repeatable glitch. Now, theDestiny 2community is trying to figure out just what is causing this massive damage glitch.

As seen in a few videos below, the glitch suddenly takes regular boss damage and multiplies it to levels that are unheard of inDestiny 2. A single mountaintop shot, for example, can hit for the maximum damage of 999,999 without any in-game buffs like at theShattered Throne dungeon’s final boss.
Looking closely at the videos,Destiny 2players have surmised that the glitch might only happen under two circumstances, but there is some disagreement. One, is that the weapon needs to deal non-precision damage like Mountaintop, Anarchy, orXenophage. The other is that the target needs to be under the effects of an Oppressive Darkness grenade, which debuffs an enemy like a Hunter’s Tether would.
One of the other strong theories is that theDestiny 2servers are struggling to handle the “tick damage” of an Oppressive Darkness grenade when combined with the damage of another weapon, usually Mountaintop. Anarchy has been used in several videos where the glitch is present, but not always. Considering thatDestiny 2’s servers have been more inconsistentthan usual during Season of Arrivals, it’s possible that this could be causing the damge bug.
Some are likening the damage glitch to theWitherhoard bugthat would randomly take a boss from full health to 0 health in a matter of seconds. With that bug, it seemed like the stacking of Witherhoard shots in a 6-player raid fireteam triggered some buff that wasn’t applying correctly. Here, the damage can happen even when players are solo.
Right now, theDestiny 2community cannot reliably recreate the bug but they are getting close to solving it. Hopefully, by figuring out what is causing the bug, Bungie will be able to eliminate it before thelaunch of Beyond Light. If fireteams could insta-kill bosses next season, it would have a major impact on the upcoming raid race.
Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
