A modder has just released a mod for the originalDead Spacethat turns the game into a veritable first-person shooter. While the classic third-person over-the-shoulder perspective has historically been a mainstay for the vast majority ofDead Spacegames across all platforms, there have always been those who would’ve preferred to play from a different point of view.
Now, asEA gauges interest in moreDead Spaceremakes, the franchise appears to have been given a new lease on life after the remake of the 2008 original kicked things into overdrive. It was to be expected that modders would take a look at what’s available and get to work on optimizing it for modern sensibilities, and an all-new first-person mod is what’s come of it.

While the new remake ofDead Spacemay have attracted all the franchise and general horror fans' attention as of late, it would appear that there’s still good reason to go back to the original after all. A modder going by the appropriate nickname of ReverseEngineeringGamer has released a retrofit for the 2008 version ofDead Space, turning the game into a full-fledged FPS. From what ReverseEngineeringGamer has shown, most of the game’s features work well from the first-person perspective, including the series' standard diegetic interface.
SinceDead Space’s graphics have aged rather well, most PC gamers should find themselves right at home with this new way of playing the original game. The only downside, it seems, is the fact that there’s no real way to check Isaac’s health outside the inventory screen, as the UI for it is tied to his spinal RIG attachment. However, one might claim that this only adds to the game’s horror vibe.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that ReverseEngineeringGamer has already mentioned that it would be feasible to develop an FPS mod for theremarkably successfulDead Spaceremakeas well. “It is possible to do the same with the remake,” he said via YouTube comments, “but not right now.” In other words, they may tackle the 2023 release in the future, though it’s not worth holding one’s breath for it just yet.
Naturally, jumping back into the original version of the game means dealing withDead Space’s worst mini-games, which the new remake did away with. This, however, is a small price to pay for experiencing one of the best sci-fi horror games of all time from a new perspective.
Dead Spaceis available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
