Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s use of skill-based matchmaking has proven to be highly controversial, with many fans wanting the game to simply have a ranked mode instead. While there’s no sign thatCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold WarSBMM will be going away, there is at least some indication that a proper ranked mode is going to be added to the game sooner rather than later.
According toCall of Dutyseries leaker Tom Henderson, who has accurately leakedCoDnews in the past,Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warranked playwill be coming within the next few months. Henderson believes that the mode will be added to the popular FPS by March, though didn’t provide an exact release date. Apparently, it’s possible thatCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warranked mode will be added as part of Season 1, but there’s also the chance that it will instead be added to kick off Season 2 in the game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s ranked mode, when it is added to the game, is expected to be called League Play. League Play has been featured in mostCall of Dutygames since it was originally introduced inBlack Ops 2, but was noticeably absent from2019’sModern Warfare.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s lack of a proper ranked mode was a big part of that game’s SBMM controversy, but for one reason or another, it was never added to the game.
And again, it must be stressed that just becauseCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Waris apparently getting a ranked mode, that doesn’t mean SBMM is going away for the other game modes. It’s entirely possible, and in fact very likely, thatCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warwill keep SBMMfor the standard game modes while also introducing a proper ranked mode to the game. So fans should keep that in mind before they get too excited.
Fans should also keep in mind the possibility thatCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warranked mode isn’t coming at all. While Henderson is aprovenCall of Dutyleaker, it’s always possible that their information is inaccurate. Like with any leak, it’s best to take this news with a grain of salt until something official is announced.
On the bright side, if Henderson is correct about whenCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warranked mode is coming, then more information should come sooner rather than later. Either fans will learn about it within the next few weeks while Season 1 is still live, or else they’ll learn about it duringCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold WarSeason 2- assuming it’s coming to the game at all, that is.
