JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle Rbuilds upon classic elements of the 3D fighting genre, infusing them with some unique mechanics drawn directly from the show, includingthe use of Stands in battle. While much will feel familiar to fans of other fighting games,All-Star Battle Rhas some distinct mechanical quirks. These tips and tricks should help beginners to get into the swing of things.
6Dash Jumps
Walking speeds inAll-Star Battle Rare relatively slow for the fighting game genre, so most of the time players will want to dash everywhere to close the distance between them and their opponent. Dashing isn’t the only way to navigate the battlefield, however. Standard high jumps are an option, but they don’t provide much horizontal movement, making it hard to close distances this way.
In many cases, the best option is to use a dash jump. This move wasoriginally mistranslated as an air dash, but that isn’t how it functions. The player performs a dash jump by jumping immediately after performing a dash. This flings the character forward in the air but at a lower height than a standard jump, allowing them to close the distance on their opponent while giving them tactical options that aren’t available during a standard dash.

5Taunt Wisely
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventureis over-the-top even by the ridiculous standards of most anime. Its stylish, exaggerated characters are even more prone to mid-fight monologues than the average anime hero. The developershave kept with the tone of the show by incorporating taunts as a key part of combat. Whereas in mostother fighting gamesa taunt is a fun but ultimately useless way of teasing one’s opponent, taunts serve an important function inAll-Star Battle R.

Once per match, taunting an opponent reduces their Heart Heart Attack (HHA) meter by 1, allowing the taunter to delay their opponent’s use of certain special moves. It also acts as a guaranteed set-up once per match, leaving the opponent vulnerable to follow-up damage. Knowing when to taunt and what attack to follow it up with can make a big difference, and though it’s difficult for beginners to learn, it’s worth getting to work on right away.
4Taunt Often
Reducing the opponent’s HH meter and setting upan attack with one’s Standisn’t the only use of taunts. Though those effects of taunting only apply once per match, taunting has another use that applies throughout the match.Taunting an opponent when they are downed eliminates their normal rising period, preventing the downed player from using certain rising moves and allowing both players to immediately resume the fight.
Doing so is a gamble, since there’s no guarantee that the attacker is the one who will emerge victorious from the following exchange. Taunting often is a good way to deny one’s opponent time to think, keeping the pressure on them. Of course, it also denies the attacker that same planning time, so players who want to make aggressive use of taunting need to be able to close the deal.

3No Proximity Normals
Normal attacks are triggered simply by hitting one of the basic punch of kick buttons, with or without additional directional input. These attacks form the foundation of battles in most fighting games: they’re simple, typically fast, and can easily be strung together into complicated combos. In many fighters, proximity influences normal attacks. This means that the same button input will produce different moves depending on the fighters' distance from one another.

All-Star Battle Rdoesn’t feature proximity normals.Normal attacks look and function the exact same regardless of how close the fighters are to one another. This makes things a bit easier for new players, since they don’t have to learn the timing and power of twice as many normal moves. Playing as and against characters inAll-Star Battle Ris a bit easier because of this somewhat reduced learning curve. The game more than makes up for this complexity in other areas, however.
2Support Attacks
Players aren’t on their own in battle. They can use a Support Attack to call a second character into the fight, allowing them to extend combos and pull off certain strategies that would otherwise be impossible. Support characters can also be used to break opponent’s combos. Doing so, however, puts the support character in a longer cooldown, so the player will have to time their combo breaks well in order to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
The number of times the support character can be called during the round is indicated by the lights below the character’s icon. Different characters can be called in for support a different number of times, so the player will have to determine which support character works best with their playstyle. Each character also has a unique support attack which can belong to several different attack types, making one’s choice of character even more important.

1Survive With Stylish Guard
Stands are a manifestation of a person’s life energy, used by fighters inJoJoto take on even the most dangerous foes. It’s no surprise that Stands inAll-Star Battle Rdraw a lot of attention, given their flashy effects, lengthy auto-combos, and general cool factor. There is a much less flashy mechanic that can be equally important to know, however.
The Stylish Guard allows players to buff a Stylish Evade until it is triggered, allowing the player to create an opening for counterattack. Having more counterattack options is obviously important, but players who rely on the Stylish Guard too heavily will be punished. This is because to use it properly, a player must be able to predict their opponent’s attack. Overall, proper use of the Stylish Guard may be one of the most difficult features of combat inAll-Star Battle R,which is all the more reason for beginners to at least dip their toes in the water of this tricky technique.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle Ris available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
