ABaldur’s Gate 3player has recently discovered how dangerous torches can be, sharing their tragic and explosive story with the community.Baldur’s Gate 3is one of the best RPGs to come out in recent years, and this story shows how well-made its systems are, as even a single torch can cause a lot of trouble.
Baldur’s Gate 3was one of the most successful 2023 games, selling over 10 million units, and becoming an unexpected major hit. Part of why fans loved it so much was due to how immersive its world was, as different elements could interact with each other and create unexpected situations, just like in a traditional tabletop RPG.

Now, aBaldur’s Gate 3player called nathanmo17 shared the story of how they almost ruined their Honour Mode run inBG3by carrying a torch with them. According to nathanmo17, they were using a Shilelagh torch when they enteredthe Zhentarim Hideout in Act 1. However, due to a situation that was not described in detail by the player, the torch interacted with something like an oil barrel, likely causing an explosion, which made the local Zhentarin hostile and almost killed nathanmo17, who was playing in Honour Mode. Also, due to becoming enemies with the Zhentarim, the gamer lost the chance to gain the Titanstring Bow, which can be acquired from a merchant in the location.
Nathanmo17’s post received over 70 comments, with many gamers telling their own stories ofusing torches inBaldur’s Gate 3or describing the best ways to avoid them. For instance, some gamers claimed that they avoid using these items due to how dangerous they can be, preferring Darkvision or the Light cantrip instead. Other players argued that they don’t even need torches, as cantrips such as Produce Flame do not occupy a hand and can also work. Some gamers prefer to use torches to their advantage, though, such as employing them to create huge explosions in areas crowded with enemies.
Some Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Use Torches In Their Builds
It’s clear that torches are divisive inBaldur’s Gate 3, but some players even manage to use them in their builds.BG3’s Torch Lord build, for example, is a powerful end-game build that gets creative with the use of this type of equipment. This build is a Paladin/Druid multiclass that focuses on Charisma and Dexterity and mixes abilities such as Divine Smite and Shillelagh to bring torches to their full potential.
