AsAvatar: The Way of Watercontinues making millions worldwide, its creator James Cameron remains busy working on what comes next for the franchise and that includes introducing new sides to Pandora, including the possibility of evil Na’vi.

In both the firstAvatarfilm and the sequel, the main antagonistic force are the human invaders led by Stephen Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch, with the Na’vi serving as the good guys beyond any reasonable doubt. InThe Way of Water, Cameron introduced the Metkayin, a new Na’vi tribe that contrasts with the “Forest people” where Neytiri and Jake Sully from, but the director has plans to add even more factions in future films.

These ideas were somewhat outlined in an interview from French media outlet20 Minutes, with Cameron saying he wants to explore new cultures he hasn’t shown yet, The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because, at the moment, I have only shown their good sides.” He added that, so far, viewers have only seen the good side the Na’vi and the bad parts about humans, yetAvatar 3will flip that narrative, depending on how wellThe Way of Waterdoes, of course.

While it’s a well-known fact thatCameron’s vision forAvatarexpandsall the way toAvatar 5in 2028, he believes “the last installments will be the best” due to how many introductions and setup work had to be done n the first two. Speaking on whether he will be the one to realize that vision, Cameron said he feels “personally responsible for the huge investment I requested from Disney forAvatar”, so if everything goes as planned he should be the one directing the next three movies as well since he’s “the only one that knows even the most minute detail of this universe.”

The change of scenery from forest and jungle to the sea wasa welcome addition toThe Way of Water, with the different character designs in the likes of Kate Winslet’s Ronal seen as a nice touch that does indeed give the Na’vi a wider scope. After all, if some new fire or ash Na’vi are thrown into the mix, that tribe could make the conflict with the humans more interesting if an alien faction were to join forces with the invaders or be tricked into fighting their own kind, both in a way that mimics a colonization tactic that’s been documented throughout history.

As Cameron says,Avatar: The Way of Watersets upseveral plot lines that will surely be expanded on in the future, and with the movie movingcloser to surpassingTop Gun: Maverick’sperformance, the director should get to make the other 3 films he has in mind.
