Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s announcement may not have been a huge surprise, given the past several months' rumors, but it was still exciting. Ubisoft’s efforts to improve theAssassin’s Creedfranchise over the past several years have been well-realized.Assassin’s Creed OriginsandAssassin’s Creed Odysseyhave reinvigorated fans' love of the franchise. And now fans are looking toAssassin’s Creed Valhallato see just how Ubisoft has raised the bar again.

Character customization appears to be one area that Ubisoft plans on improving inAssassin’s Creed Valhalla. In a recent livestream with the Washington Post,Assassin’s Creed Valhallagame director Ashraf Ismail talked about the different customization options players will have with the game’sprotagonist, Eivor. Not only will players have the option of customizing Eivor’s tattoos and war paint, but they’ll also be able to customize their hair. That includes facial hair for those playing male Eivor.

Ismail says that players will have quite a various amount of hairstyles to select from inAssassin’s Creed Valhalla. That’s both in terms of hairstyles as well as coloring customization options. Eivor is set to be theAssassin’s Creedfranchise’s most-customizable protagonist yet.

As for gear, a staple in theAssassin’s Creedfranchise,Ubisoftis making at least one big change. It sounds like gear will be split into more customizable items, so that players can swap out different pieces on different parts of their character. These gear pieces will still be tied to stat boosts, however, and can be upgraded. That means that customization may take a back seat to min/maxing, at least when it comes to gear.

The full extent ofAssassin’s Creed Valhalla’s character customizationremains to be seen. And regardless of the new features, it’s still likely to be limited compared to more RPG-focused titles. Yet every feature addition makes for a game that players can become more attached to and that’s worth acknowledging.

Perhaps even more important thanAssassin’s Creed Valhalla’s character customization will be the game’snew settlement feature. Players will be able to build up their people’s settlement, offering a new scale of world-building tying the player into Valhalla’s story and setting. A customized Eivor building up their customized home filled with a people found and recruited by Eivor sounds very exciting.
