Assassin’s Creedappears to be changing its meta and modern-day stories in favor of the narratives revolving around the game’s historical settings. Since the very firstAssassin’s Creedtitle, the historical stories of characters like Altair, Ezio, and Eivor have always been met with a modern day companion. Up untilAssassin’s Creed 3, thestory of Desmond Milescontinued alongside his ancestors as they fought against the Templars. More recently, as the series has embraced more RPG elements, with Layla Hassan acting as the focal point of the modern narrative.

However, it seems thatAssassin’s Creedmay be changing the way it approaches the modern day and meta storylines. First, it was reported along with a slew of otherinformation onAssassin’s Creed Miragethat the new game would not have any playable present day segments. This lead to some wondering where the series would go with its story centered around the Animus and Abstergo. Now,Assassin’s CreedExecutive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté, is sharing some information on what’s next for the series' focus on the modern day.

According to Côté, the modern day storylines will be moving to the hub ofAssassin’s Creed Infinity. AsAssassin’s Creed Infinityacts as a platform/launcher hub for the upcoming titles in the franchise, this means that fans may be saying goodbye to the playable segments of the modern day storylines, and characters like Desmond or Layla won’t be appearing again. Côté even implied this may be the case for the future ofAssassin’s Creed, as he states people won’t need to know “who Desmond and Layla are.”

Further, Côté states that the player will take on the role of the protagonist in the modern day story, as throughAssassin’s Creed Infinity’shub, they will have access to their own Animus. “It is your DNA explorer on your desktop,” Côté states. It seems that this is designed to make entering the franchise easier for new players, as they will just be able to hop into a historical story without sitting through a few minutes of exposition on how their character got there. Whatever happens with the modern story, it seemsUbisoft is banking onAssassin’s Creed Infinitybeing the franchise’s future.

Whether that involves playable modern day segments or not, theAssassin’s Creedfranchise will still have plenty of interesting historical locations to go to.Feudal Japan will be the setting forAssassin’s Creed: Codename Red, for example, the first game forInfinitythat was unveiled at the recent Ubisoft Forward showcase.
