Among Usis an internet phenomenon that not many can explain. This two year old game suddenly and unexpectedly blew up in terms of popularity as a chain reaction of major streamers began playing the game, revitalizing interest in it.InnerSloth, the game’s developer, has been enjoying this resurgence of its game, but the extra attention hasn’t all been good.
Though this ought to come as no surprise to anyone at this point,Among Ushas a serious cheating problem. Some players are using underhanded tactics to secure victory for their friends, while others are straight up hacking into the game to give themselves unfair advantages.

This is reminiscent ofFall Guys' own battle with cheaters, a problem that was mostly fixed by the introduction of Easy Anti Cheat to the game. Unfortunately, InnerSloth probably isn’t in a place where it can make a big move like that, so the future remains uncertain.
It’s anunspoken rule inAmong Usthat players are only supposed to communicate during emergency meetingsor after a body is reported. This rule is reinforced by the game itself, which only allows players to type to each other in game during these times. To make the game flow better, many players use third party voice chats like Discord to communicate during these meetings, but it’s a very exploitable system. There’s nothing to stop players from sharing information about who the impostor is even if they’re dead and shouldn’t be talking, or from siding with the impostors as a crewmate because of a friendship.
While this is difficult to catch, it doesn’t come up too terribly often. What players are starting to see more of in public matches though is actual hackers. These players use client side cheats to increase their character’s speed or vision, sometimes even directly determining who the impostor is at the beginning of a match. Though people trying to cheat at a game isn’t anything new, what makes it so bizarre is thatAmong Usdoesn’t have a progression system likeFall Guysdoes. Each game is played purely for fun, and players wanting to customize their appearance can do so simply by purchasing items.
It’s unclear what sort ofsatisfaction cheaters get out of ruining lobbies inAmong Us, but it is likely being done simply to spoil the fun of others. InnerSloth is looking into ways it can address this problem, but until that day comes, public lobbies may be even more messy than they already are.
