Summary

TheAlan Wake 2developers used fan wikis to keep track of some of the story’s details while writing the plot. While the use of these tools may sound surprising to some gamers at first,Alan Wake 2has a complex story, and several fansplayedAlan Wake 1before the sequel, so it’s important to keep even the smallest facts straight so as not to disappoint the most diehard fans of the franchise.

Alan Wake 2was released last month with positive reviews from most gaming outlets, and the story and atmosphere were among the most commonly praised elements in the game. Considering thatAlan Wake 2’s story is set in the same universe asControland the first game, the writers had many small details to remember.

Now,Alan Wake 2co-directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley revealed more about how theyremembered details ofAlan Wake 1’s storyduring an interview with the Friends Per Second Podcast. At around 1:47:10 in the video, the show’s host asked the duo how they kept all references and callbacks straight. Then, Sam Lake thanked the community and confessed that there were some obscure details that not even the writers could remember, so the team used fan wikis to refresh their memory. According to Lake, “I confess, I trust these people (the fans). I’ll be thinking, ‘We said something about this in the originalAlan Wake, but I can’t for the life of me remember the details.’”

That does not mean that the team at Remedy did not spend significant effort in keeping the story straight, though. Lake and Rowley explained that Remedy had both a narrative and writing team working on the game and tried to track every single aspect of the story with internal documentation. However, due to the complexity ofAlan Wake 2’s narrative and several plot changes occurring during development, some aspects could become significantly difficult to remember.

What’s Next For Alan Wake 2?

While most fans who boughtAlan Wake 2during the release have probably already finished the story, there’s more to come soon. Last month, Remedy Entertainment confirmed thatAlan Wake 2will have free DLC drops, which will be “pretty significant,” and add more to the game’s narrative. Aside from that, the game has two full-sized expansions planned for 2024, called Nights Springs and Lake House, which don’t have many details yet. Hopefully, these expansions will expand the game’s lore and universe even more.
